Current Students as Recommenders

Tom,

Great blog. I wasn't an English major so it's been difficult to find recommenders. Problem: I'm using a current MFA student for a recommendation. He knows my work , and we've set up reading and writing groups together so he could say some good things. Is a student frowned upon as a recommender? Also, he is currently enrolled at a school I plan on applying to...is this even worse? I'm sure I could find another recommender if I really needed to, but I need to figure this out soon.

Krazy Ken: Yes, this is problematic. If you have someone else, use them. If not, then go with who you've got. It's not the best situation, but it probably won't sink you either, especially since they'll be looking at your letters because they love your writing sample. Rock on.
