I sat down yesterday to finish up what i think will become one of my application stories - my only problem is that it's genre writing -- Fantasy. I think it's strong, but at the end of the day -- i'm a Fantasy writer, my voice is strongest in this medium, my ideas the brightest. Would it be better to send 2 fantasy short stories that are strong to stick with what i would consider my voice, or use something out of the genre, that might not be as strong to play off what might be the preferences of the admission's committee? Any insight would be great!

I agree with the idea of "as long as it's the best story you can send" theory. I'm a romance themed person myself. I think you should be proud and confident in what you write and just submit it. There are many other theory's I've used to help me.

I sent short pieces to a lot of places. I don't think it is a problem.
My only question when I was applying (and I never figured this out...) is what to do if you want to send multiple short pieces but the place specifically requests 2 long stories. Most places just have a page limit, but others were more specific.
Sean: tough question.
When you say "fantasy" do you mean stuff like Borges, Aimee Bender or what not? or do you mean Robert Jordon, elves and hobbits type stuff?
If it is the former, I wouldn't feel any qualms about sending it. If you want to do that kind of work it would be better to get into a university that supports aesthetic diversity (ie, one that will accept you) than one that doesn't like that kind of work. You dont' want to "trick" your way in, only to find the workshops or faculty aren't helpful to you. - September 27, 2007 at 5:43 PM

There is a woman in my program that got accepted with 6 pages of fiction. I applied with one 21 page story and one 4 page story and am currently writing a trio of 2-3 page stories for workshop.
