Two rejections on my birthday :( No good news for me so far. UC Irvine sent me a snail mail rejection and I broke down and called UC Davis who said they have notified all acceptances, they have a four person waitlist, and my application is with "the rest."
San Diego State has NOT begun notifying yet (according to this blog and driftless house). I'm very anxious about that school myself, so I've been watching like a hawk! It's not over yet, dammit.
Just got an acceptance email to West Virginia University in poetry! Very exciting, but the offer doesn't include funding at this point. Sad face. Back to waiting for news.
Congratulations to those of you who have received good news over the past few days! I like how people are hearing all times of day, all days of the week at this point. Stay on your toes!
Long-time lurker here. Just got into Emerson for fiction and I'm a little conflicted. I spent two years at California Institute of the Arts and was a bit disenchanted by the avant-guard nonsense that went on there. At heart, I'm a purist. I take art seriously. I'm all for irony, but in moderation, folks. Please. And I'm worried that as an art school, Emerson is basically a New England CalArts. Anyone who's totally stoked to attend, can you let me know why? I know why I'm stoked, but I don't want to make another bad decision like I did with CalArts. My email is and_dance@msn.com. Thanks! Lauren
I'm at cal state, long beach as well. I wonder if I know you. I've been here a long time. I too enjoy the faculty, though sometimes I think their definitions of what makes good fiction can be a little narrow.
Just read Hullaballoo on ASU rejection. I don't know - would it kill the administrators/program people/whoever sends out rejections to be a little more kinder? We're not babies, and we don't need mollycoddling, but a modicum of niceness never hurt anybody. Sheesh.
On the other hand, with that subject line, you're not likely to get your hopes up and come crashing down with that first line, "We received an extraordinary number of applications this year..." It sucks. For sure. But at least they're not leading you on.
A couple of weeks ago I received a GNE from UNCG--I exchanged a few emails with the department, and after the promise of more information, I heard nothing. Has this happened to anyone else? Is that like, a negative GNE?
Today I got a letter from The New School, which I was excepting because I knew their rejections were coming out soon. But I was surprised to find that I was waitlisted.
I was really excited but everybody I've told has had a reaction along the lines of: "Oh geez, I'm sorry."
None of them could understand why I am so happy.
I guess if you aren't a part of this process, you don't understand how grueling on your nerves it can be.
CONGRATS, Alyssa! You've also given me hope, because I haven't heard crap from NS yet. I hate it when people are lukewarm about my own good news, so I can emphasize about that, too.
I didn't think there would be any 49ers on this site or Driftless House, but am glad to know I am not alone. I'm going to concur with you two and say that the faculty is, really, quite good. I'm on the fiction side, but I understand Long Beach is a bit more poetry oriented?
Have you guys/gals been accepted anywhere? Where have you applied?
@LA Falcon What do you mean by "narrow?"
@Espy Do you know if CSULB has been looking at the fiction at all? It'll be a bit sad if they haven't started, considering that they said they'd start reviewing it exactly a month ago.
One of my professors/recommenders told me that a lot of the people they accept do get accepted elsewhere, so maybe they're waiting for some of the applicants to call and say they're not interested anymore.
Hi everyone, I finally have some nice news to share - I'm in at the low residency at Spalding University. Best of luck to all those still waiting for good news - it'll surely come along.
You are not alone. I'm applied for poetry and I emailed back and forth with UNCG in early February with the final email promising me more information to come and then heard nothing back.
I also emailed the assistant director in early March to follow up and have not heard nothing. Not really sure what all this means except that they aren't all that great at following up on emails or that they receive way too many of them to keep track of. Hope this helps.
@Future Oregonees (If that's a word)
Anyone thinking of University of Oregon for Poetry or Fiction? I would love to talk, feel free to email me at jkolch (at) gmail (dot) com.
Wow, quite a few 49ers! I have had both CNF and poetry courses, but I'm exceedingly biased toward poetry, so that has where I am most knowledgeable. (It would be unfair for me to say that Long Beach leans one way over the other, because I have been so poetry-heavy. I can, however, tell you that the poetry faculty is fantastic. Ed Hirsch is reading tomorrow night, by the way. You should go!)
I have no idea if CSULB has been looking at fiction. The professor I talked to looks over the poetry, so all I had heard was from that particular side.
I wouldn't be surprised that a lot of the people accepted get accepted elsewhere; I think a lot of it (other factors aside) comes down to the fact that look, here we are, mid-March, and they still haven't told anybody anything (hopefully by now they are at least looking at applications)... meanwhile, a lot of other people (as this blog clearly shows) are getting acceptances elsewhere and... you know, they have to make a decision sooner or later.
I love LB, I really do. I'd love to continue working with these guys. But, I don't like the exceptionally long waiting game.
So I have a hypothetical question for y'all. Ok, that means not hypothetical at all.
I got into UNH, no funding guaranteed; I've been rejected by eight other schools, am still waiting for the ones all others are waiting for, UVA and Columbia, but let's face it: if accepted, Columbia would be unfeasible because unaffordable, and ha, my ass ain't getting in to UVA. It's my first year applying.
And this is where I feel like a selfish human being full of hubris and delirium: I will check out UNH, but how about if my heart was set on a Top Ten school to which I got rejected (but got close to final committee consideration)? Has anyone here gotten into just one place where they are fairly certain they don't want to go? Is it worth waiting another year? Is this a question I can only answer myself? Sure...but I like feedback.
I know, I know, I should be grateful I got in anywhere, and I am, given this year being so ridiculously competitive. But I'm also ridiculously competitive myself and want to go to the best possible school...
Any wisdom? Feel free to hiss and boo if I'm just being obnoxious...
Not to state the obvious, but if you don't think you want to go to UNH at all, you probably shouldn't have applied there.
Now, if it's an issue of funding, that I'm much more responsive to. You should probably visit, on the chance that you could totally fall in love with it and just need to go there, but turning it down if you don't get offered any funding is a perfectly valid (if no doubt disappointing) option.
And, of course, remember that the more people who turn down UNH, the better chance I have of getting funding or a tuition remission... so, you know, follow your heart and stuff! :)
Also, I may have forgotten to mention that I learned that information approx. 2 weeks ago (which, when you think of it, means it was only sitting around/getting organized/processed for 2 weeks)... it is very likely they got the ball rolling by now.
@ Georgie
This may sound cliche, but I think it's applicable: do what you think is best for you.
If you are really heart-strong on a top 10 school, then is there any harm in waiting a year to really work on this application and apply again?
I don't know, it's a very personal answer; it depends on what you know what you can/cannot do in a year (in terms of job, funding, housing, etc.)
If you really want to go to the best school possible, realize that the "best school possible" is very subjective. You want the MFA to work for you. And, as we've seen... not all MFA programs suit everyone's needs/wants/tastes. If prestige is something that is important to you, then go for it. People excel in places they love. Do you love a certain place in the top 10? Do you love UNH? And, if you do love UNH, are you willing to take the risk of no funding?
Would UNH let you defer your acceptance to next year so that you could re-apply to only your funded dream schools?
@ DigAPony
I was so nervous for my interview with Mankato that I can't even recall it! I think it went decently. I have some experience teaching creative writing workshops, and I tried to talk about how important teaching is to my MFA plans.
I did ask "Um, so, am I accepted?" because I had never received the acceptance email that everyone got earlier in the month (before Mankato went on Spring Break). I flustered them for a bit! He didn't have the list in front of him but was kind enough to double-check and call me back a few hours later with confirmation. How nice!
I sent out 20 applications in fiction:
Rejected: UBC, Alabama, UNCW, The New School, Brown
Accepted: MSU Moorhead, MSU Mankato, Sarah Lawrence College
@Georgie - I just wanted to say, I feel for you! I hope whatever you choose works out. My gut advice, for what it's worth: if you really check out UNH and you aren't even a little excited, and you're going to have to pay money, than it might be worth applying again next year... maybe taking some classes as a "non-degree-seeking student," as some folks have mentioned. If it's ends up being payed-for, though - I say go get it, take a chance! And congrats on your acceptance, btw. I'm just sorry it wasn't really the one you wanted.
@sahaider - well oh my god, I'm glad you're okay! Sounds really scary...
@kaybay - hi! It's nice to hear from you again :)
@mickey - thanks for letting us know about UAF and Idaho. I'm sorry we won't be classmates next year! Good luck to you. Do you know where you're landing?
Ah, hopefully they have started. A friend of mine got accepted to CSULB's Psyche Masters two weeks ago, so I've been very anxious about Long Beach since then. I already got a couple of acceptances (and rejections), so it'd be nice to know if LB will be an option for me.
I think the idea that LB may be stronger in poetry stems from the fact that Locklin has had a very strong presence/reputation there.
It would have been great find classmates on this blog, have you decided on Fairbanks yet?
As for me, I'm spending 24 hours a day drifting between Washington and CSU. If I get offered funding at either, that will sway me, if not...... too hard to decide!!
Digapony,
I wasn't offered a TA. Robert Wrigley said I was around 5 of 9 in order, and it wasn't likely to get to me. I hope you the best!! It'd be great to get a TA there, and to study under someone as talented as Wrigley.
Hope people here tomorrow...Tuesday is newsday right?
U. of Arizona sent me a "ummm F. U absolutely not" letter via snail mail today.
sad face. That one's upsetting. I'd liked them a lot.
I'm scared that I'll get two more no's and my only option will th The New School...which I'm SUPER PUMPED about doing in theory (incredibe faculty and philosophy and NEW YORK CITY), but the funding is really scaring me. I need to get in touch with them, ask for information about all the questions I have, talk to as many people in the department as possible, both faculty and past/present students. Get the info!

thanks y'all and HANDS IN THE AYUH for all you rockstars gettin' in left and right. YOU RULE!
I'm annoyed. I shouldn't be because I've at least been accepted somewhere but here's where my status stands now.
Accepted: UBC
Rejected: Oregon State, University of Texas
HEARD NOTHING, NADA, ZILCH AND EVERYONE ELSE HAS: Minnesota, Washington, Oregon, Texas State, Houston, University of San Francisco, Portland State, University of Guelph.
I'm diligently checking online statuses, my mailbox, and that my phone is charged.
I really didn't want to harass some poor admin assistant, but should I just start calling these schools?
I am impatient. My file for the PhD program is complete except for the GRE scores--which have yet to arrive--and the grad admissions department won't forward my file until they get the scores. Grrrr. I shouldn't have started this whole process so late, I know, but this was my new Plan B.
I'm just venting, because my family doesn't get it.
I emailed the head of the admissions committee to ask if they'd request my file without the scores. They're already considering me late, so I figured it wouldn't hurt to push it a bit more. If GRE scores really aren't important, as so many here have said, they may just do it.
Hi, all. Congrats on all the acceptances and waitlists!
I still have no good news to report, but I thought I'd check in to let you know I received my Cornell rejection by mail on Saturday and my Purdue rejection by e-mail last night.
This brings my official rejection total to 10 (out of 24). That's not counting the many presumed rejections.
My only good news remains the Indiana waitlist. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that Indiana will turn into an acceptance. It's only been one week since I found out I was on the waitlist, but it feels as if I've been in this excrutiating waitlist purgatory for weeks.
I'm thinking the waiting season is pretty much over for me -- just haven't heard from Brooklyn and Temple so assuming rejection. Counting those as rejections, I'm coming out of this craziness with seven rejections and five acceptances, which is such an amazing shock. If anyone remembers reading my posts around January-February, I was convinced I wouldn't get in anywhere.
Now that the acceptances have come in, I'm being bombarded by advice from all directions! My parents say, "Save money!" and also "Go to Boston, it's only an hour away from home!" My professors say, "Go to Sarah Lawrence! The amazing faculty! The connections!" Yesterday a pretty famous writer came to give a reading at my school, I went over to get my book signed and chatted with him, talked about grad school and he said "Go to Sarah Lawrence!"
Eep!
Sarah Lawrence is my first choice for faculty. So many of my favorite poets are there. But it costs so friggin' much. I got my financial aid letter and got a little scholarship, and a pile of loans! To all the people who are telling me to go to SLC, I want to say, "Sure! Do you want to pay for it?"
Emerson is my first choice for teaching, interdisciplinary work, multi-genre work, and location. The faculty is great but I haven't been obsessively reading their work for years, like I have with the SLC faculty. I would have a cheap place to live in Boston because my boyfriend and a bunch of friends share a house there. (And also, would not have to struggle through long-distance with the boyfriend.) And I actually would like to be only an hour train ride away from my family and friends at home. It's cheaper than SLC and I haven't got my fin aid letter yet, but they allegedly give more merit aid, and assistantships, which I'm really hoping I got.
Or, I could get a TAship from Rutgers (Maybe? little chance?) and that would throw another wrench in the decision-making process.
But, give up the amazing once-in-a-lifetime opportunity at SLC to work with my favorite poets ever? It'd probably be worth it not to disappear under a mountain of debt as soon as I graduate. *sigh* Decisions.
We can continue this discussion in the next mailbag, but I just wanted to say that I haven't seen anything but acceptances from Portland State. I have yet to receive a decision notification from them, as well.
I see that Emerson is first on your list for teaching. Can I ask why? I too am looking to teach after completing the MFA and got into Emerson as well (along with Lesley and UMASS Boston) and finding the decision making process so difficult. I am wondering if you could share your Emerson teaching notes/thoughts/reasonings with me.
Please feel free to email: christinaboling@gmail.com
I posted a couple of times but it's been awhile. I have been peeking once in awhile but I'm really trying, with minimal success, not to obsess.
My status is this (all CNF):
Accepted: WVU Waitlisted: GMU ("very high" on the waitlist)
No word: American, LSU, GCSU, Memphis
The silence is really frustrating, but I would be thrilled to go to WVU. In fact, even if I am accepted at any of the others I am likely to choose WVU.
I am going to withdraw from consideration at Memphis. There is nothing they could offer that would compete with WVU. I think I am going to take me name off GMU's waitlist. I applied there becuase it is local (and cheap) and I could keep on working part time and go to school part time. But I visited and was very unimpressed. I also think I really want the immersion experience. So I am going to withdraw there -- the rest of you can move up a little!

Miami
I got waitlisted for the MPhil in English Literature at the University of Hong Kong, but for you guys that's probably irrelevant.
For some reason I feel weird. And depressed.
by the way, my michener application was for fiction. 700 applications for five slots. yikes.

I continue to send best wishes to all of you!
New mailbag just went up.
Accepted to Louisville's MA program.
Waiting to hear about the funding situation.
@Emily Walker
We can continue this discussion in the next mailbag, but I just wanted to say that I haven't seen anything but acceptances from Portland State. I have yet to receive a decision notification from them, as well.

great time waster...
@ Laura T
I see that Emerson is first on your list for teaching. Can I ask why? I too am looking to teach after completing the MFA and got into Emerson as well (along with Lesley and UMASS Boston) and finding the decision making process so difficult. I am wondering if you could share your Emerson teaching notes/thoughts/reasonings with me.

Very happy about the CC acceptance. Anyone else leaning towards CC?
@Ali,
I wish you luck as well! And uh...yeah...maybe it's because I submitted my application in December! hehehe
@George Mason Poetry Waitlisters
I just had to decline an unfunded spot in the program.
I posted a couple of times but it's been awhile. I have been peeking once in awhile but I'm really trying, with minimal success, not to obsess.
My status is this (all CNF):
Accepted: WVU
Waitlisted: GMU ("very high" on the waitlist)
No word: American, LSU, GCSU, Memphis
The silence is really frustrating, but I would be thrilled to go to WVU. In fact, even if I am accepted at any of the others I am likely to choose WVU.
I am going to withdraw from consideration at Memphis. There is nothing they could offer that would compete with WVU.
I think I am going to take me name off GMU's waitlist. I applied there becuase it is local (and cheap) and I could keep on working part time and go to school part time. But I visited and was very unimpressed. I also think I really want the immersion experience. So I am going to withdraw there -- the rest of you can move up a little!
can someone post the link to the new mailbag, I can't find it.
Anyone else heard from Miami?
I noticed some of you have "assumed" rejections, but at least one poster informed us that letters were mailed a couple of days ago.
