Seth's Open Letter To Poets Who Hate the Creative Writing MFA
Jim Shepard on the art of close reading. Good prep for all those heading into programs next fall, and essential advice for any writer.
April, by Louise Glück. Yes, it's bleak. But great. Balm to those applying again next year, or does it just inflame you? Responses in the comments, please.

Seth - did you happen to catch Aleksandar Hemon's introduction to Best European Fiction 2010? Here is a quote that is very much representative of his bitter, uninformed, misguided mess of an intro:
“Thousands upon thousands of ambitious young writers enrolled in American writing programs are churning out half-dead stories, creating suffocating hyperinflation, all in the hope that one day they’ll be able to write a death-defying novel.”
Really, Alex??? I don't even know where to begin. A good place would seem to be his misuse of the word "hyperinflation." How he was able to cram that amount of generalization in one single sentence is baffling.
I'll try not to rehash the points you made in your open letter, because you made them thoroughly. I just find it unbelievable, criticizing a movement that attracts thousands of young people to the arts, not only as writers, but READERS. And not just readers, but close readers, worshippers of literary fiction, the very people who ensure people like Alex aren't completely anonymous.
I liked the fiction in the book, but still I wish I wouldn't have bought the damn thing, solely based on the intro. I could go on and on but I believe the ignorance of his quote speaks for itself. That's right, Al. I know you're reading this. I'm calling out names.

Thought I'd post my final list. Seth, I hope this isn't too late.
Accepted:
U of Idaho: W/TA, mad grants, fellowships, etc (attending)
Montana: W/Full Funding
EWU: W/Full Funding
Ohio State: W/Full Funding
Rejected:
Texas @ Austin
Colorado State
Michigan
Notre Dame
Syracuse
Oregon
Oregon State
Penn State
Not a whisper:
Bowling Green?
"But wait," you may ask, "you spent hours upon hours and so many dollars applying and they didn't even bother to send you a form rejection letter? Surely that's not possible!"
Well, I'm sad to inform you that it is. If I'd posted this list a few days earlier the "not a whisper" category would be even bigger. Here's hoping all of Seth's fabulous research helps get these programs in line.
I know, I know. Idaho over Montana and Ohio State? Well, some personal, familial issues played a role and also, darn it, I just love Idaho's program. I was aboslutely wowed at each step of the process, loved everything I saw in my visit, and decided to follow my gut. I've heard from Seth and others that ultimately "fit" is the most important factor. I just can't imagine accepting anywhere other than Idaho.
I declined at Ohio State and EWU a while ago, and it looks like that helped some of you - I'm grateful for that. This is a wonderful community, and I wish each of you the best. My declining Montana is very recent, and I hope the spot/funding finds its way into the hands of one of you beautiful people.
Thank you all for your support and fellowship throughout this agonizing process. I wish you all the best. And one more time, just for good measure: Thank you, Seth. I love you, buddy.
-Michael
@Chrissy, I got an email from the director saying he'd have a "definitive decision" for me by the end of the week.
So the mythical April 15 is finally here. Weird! I remember agonizing through January and February and April 15 was so far away that it might as well have been imaginary. It's really awful that it IS April 15 now and so many people here are still waiting for news. To those who will have to make their decisions today and to those who are still waiting, I wish you the best of luck!
@kaybay:
That makes sense, and good luck on getting your next round of applications together! Thanks so much for being such a supportive, dazzling force on this blog. :)
have any of you poetry folks at montana heard anything re: funding lately? i e-mailed prageeta sharma the other day to get a sense of my chances (at this point, probably not good), and i haven't heard anything back.
Has anyone heard anything in the way of UNCG updates lately? Funding? Additional acceptances? Rejections?
I just sent an email to Maryland declining an unfunded spot in poetry. Terrifying because I love that program, but necessary because I can't afford it.
Now, where's that guy who's dithering on his newly minted Michigan acceptance? I am climbing the walls here!
Depending on how today goes down, I will either be saying "Holla from Ann Arbor" or "See you again next round." Not particularly optimistic, as the feeling of being the last guy in line at the store before the cashier closes the counter is setting in.
HUGE congrats to those of you receiving good news on the cusp. It really is fantastic how operatically all this can turn out.
@Kyle I'm also hanging by a thread, waiting to hear from UNCG. They were my only acceptance, so I guess I can wait. I just don't want to!
Help! I've entered a time vortex! Seconds are minutes, minutes are hours, hours are days!
Why did I wake up so early?
Argh!!
Someone render me unconscious!
Does anyone know how long we have to decide if we are accepted from the waitlist? Does it vary? Is there a standard amount of time?
And, is anyone here attending sarah lawrence in the fall?
Damn it!
Just got an email from UNCG.
The 1/4 second that it took me to realize it was just their "Alumni & Friends" newsletter left me twitching and shaky!
Is it wrong to drink at work?
The daisy is their University Flower, by the way.
Just thought everyone would want to know.
Kristen, you got accepted to SLC off the waitlist? Congrats! I forgot which genre you are, but if you're a poet, you might have gotten the spot I gave up. :)
Just turned down an offer at Idaho. Hopefully, that bumps someone here off the waitlist.
@kaybay, on sticking with the blog after it's over.
Yeah, I hear you. After getting a sweet "no" from Tom Franklin yesterday via email, I finally got my last official rejection today (the 15th!) from guess who? Way to play to form, UVA.
Anyway, after two waitlists I'm with you-- reapplying next year in the hopes of pulling in some acceptances. Until then, I'm hounding this blog for the entertainment value/my inability to uninvest.
Laura T,
I have not been accepted yet. I am just trying to think about the situation if I do get accepted. I'm so all over the place. I feel like it will be a rushed decision to accept if I get accepted and I am nervous about that! I am fiction, not poetry. You're going to Emerson right?
Kristen,
Ohh I see. Well I really hope you get in! Yes, I'm going to Emerson.
What shall happen to infamous Indiana waitlist today? Or will the denouement be extended once more? If you are on this waitlist, shoot me an email if you hear something, and I will do the same.
phlgrlnd [at] gmail [dot] com
@ Michael re: Montana
Were you fiction or poetry?
Just received my final rejection (Purdue) by way of an very nice email from Porter Shreve saying that they liked my work, etc. and that Purdue filled its final fiction spot only yesterday. (I inquired yesterday.)
Here's my final list (fiction - rejected from all)
Oregon
Montana
WUSTL
Michener
Minnesota
Indiana
Wisconsin - Madison
Ohio State
Michigan
Iowa
Illinois - Urbana
Purdue (not quite a waiting list)
Syracuse
Cornell
Amherst
Virginia
Brown
Johns Hopkins
This is my first application season. I will go again next year. I have appreciated this blog at all points.
@ bbartok
Good luck next year! I'll be back as well.
My final list is:
Accepted:
University of Memphis (partial funding) - attending
Old Dominion (unfunded)
Rejected:
Rutgers (Camden and Newark)
University of New Mexico
University of Wyoming
All in CNF
Congrats and good luck to everyone!
@ bbartok, red
Hoping next year will be a better year for all of us.
In other news, good luck to the people making the 12th hour decisions!
did anyone else get a letter from brooklyn winking them into their MA English program instead?
I just accepted my CNF spot at Emerson College in the fall, but I'm still hanging on to my 11th-hour acceptance at George Mason. I still have a big decision to make.
I'm sad. This moment should be filled with triumph, but instead it's muddled by the possibility of me changing my mind and forfeiting my deposit.
Anyone out there accepted to George Mason and willing to talk to me? I'm in a mad dash to get to know the program. Email me at cjwid87(at)hotmail(dot)com.
So...having a mild heart attack because I'm wait-listed at Western Michigan. Tried calling, but no answer, and I don't want to feel like a jerk by telling one of my unfunded offers yes and then having to retract if Western Michigan comes through with an acceptance that includes the monies. But I think it's coming to that, because I already got an extension on deadlines, and that deadline is today. Needless to say, if anyone has a clue what's up with Western's waitlist situation, or how to stop anxiety attacks induced by phone-related activity, please inform. Gah!
Just turned down a spot at Columbia College in fiction. Hope this helps someone!
Hi Chrissy, I just emailed you about George Mason.
@Chrissy
I just gave up my acceptance for CNF at George Mason yesterday...I hope you get it.
@Jennifer -- great, I'll go read it!
@Courtney -- I don't think I got your spot (I thought maybe I was going to) because they were supposed to extend the official offer two days ago (I think they got busy and my offer got lost in the confusion). I got the details today. Freaking out. If you know anything about the program, feel free to shoot me an email. I'd love to hear what you thought of it, and what made you turn it away!
@Elissa Cahn
I'm not exactly sure what the waitlist situation at WMU is like. I'm headed in the fall for fiction, and I talked to the other MFA fictioneer who was accepted and she's going to ND, so I assume they'll have to dip into the waitlist, if they haven't already. Are you fiction or poetry?
@Chrissy
They didn't offer me any funding. Also, I got accepted with a small financial aid gift to Sarah Lawrence and I accepted my spot and sent in my deposit. I just recently got accepted at Hollins off the waitlist and I'm going down next week to visit and make my decision. It's a tough one between the two programs, but Hollins is offering much more money.
Also, I went to the Sarah Lawrence admit day, and I wanted to be romanced a bit more. I didn't get a bad feeling, but the day kind of fell flat for me when I was expecting it to be like the big, "yessss this is the right place for me!" decision maker.
We'll see how Hollins goes next weekend, but I'm so happy to be in this position! What are your thoughts? Which program would you go to if you were in my spot?
Finally April 15th! Come on now FSU and UNLV!
I need help - Can anyone, everyone please weigh in on BGSU vs UNLV! URGENT!
@Courtney -- As soon as I saw you say Hollins, I went blind with envy. So that answers your question about which I would go to.
I'm completely in love with Hollins' program. If they offered me a spot right now, I would weep with joy. If they gave me money, I could die happy.
Of course, that's just me, and I know it's a very individual thing. I tend to like smaller schools and smaller programs (even though I seem to be deciding between two bigger programs). I also love how the program is structured, and the multi-genre aspect. I'm a nonfiction writer/poet/screenwriter/playwright, so their program would've been perfect for me. I've also talked to Hollins students and it feels like they have a really fantastic community there.
I'm curious...when did you hear from them? They still haven't given me an official response, so I'm wondering if there's a chance in hell there...I'm assuming not. But, if wishes were horses!
Sorry, I'm very much in love with Hollins. I don't mean to sway you too much. But Hollins would win if I were in your spot. Hands down, no debate. :)
Got a call from Henri Cole a couple of hours ago and was offered a poetry spot at Ohio State University (which I quickly committed to)!!!
I was about as awkward as humanly possible during the phone call -- mostly because I was completely dumbfounded/speechless by the offer (I mistakenly thought that they had already filled all their spots). Henri Cole seemed like a pretty cool customer though; and he's probably made enough of those phone calls to realize that all waitlisters are a blubbering mess on April 15.
Still got to finish some paperwork apparently, but I'm looking forward to meeting some of you in Columbus next Fall!
Best of luck to everyone else!!!
April 15th, yeesh. Congrats to all who've received good news today!
@Old Poet
That's the stuff 4/15 is made of! High-five!
@all
Gave up my spot @ Columbia Coll in poetry just now. Hopefully it sends some good juju into this blogosphere!
should i be expecting a confirmation e-mail in response to my acceptance e-mail?
Congrats, Old Poet. What an amazing offer coming at virtually the last minute. You must be over the moon.
@Perpetua
I don't know much about UNLV but I did take an online workshop with Michael Czyzniejewski and found him to give excellent comments and critique. Also, Mid-American Review is a well respected journal; it would be a great opportunity to work on that.
Hey Old Poet,
Congratulations on getting off the waitlist! I am a current first year in the program :-)
Feel free to add me on facebook (search for me by name or email insertbrackets [@] gmail [.] com) and let me know if you have any questions! I've been the unofficial liason for the incoming poets, so I am quite practiced at helping the newbies!
@Chrissy
Thanks for weighing in! Yea, truth be told, I was ecstatic when I was accepted into Hollins. I live in New York City now and I had been thinking/dreaming my MFA experience would fortuitously bring me back to the south (where I grew up) and I have always gone to small liberal arts schools, so small is definitely what I had in mind. I also want a really close community of writers and SLC, did not seem entirely that way. I'm so exicted to visit and I would LOVE to go there.
@Old Poet
Congrats! Another Ohio State poet!
Email Tory, because he's very helpful, but also email me at amfabriz[at]gmail[dot]com, because I would love to talk to you!
Wow, I am just so excited about OSU.
By the way, koru is pretty darn awesome too. :)
@Courtney -- you should tell them that they should accept me off their secret, very deep waitlist. Haha. I've decided that's why they won't tell me I'm rejected. They're just trying to torture me slowly. And I love them so so much.
I really hope you have a ball visiting! It seems like such a fantastic place! I'd love to hear details after your visit!
Seth, here's the FINAL tally for poetry:
Accepted:
Western Michigan (Attending)
George Mason
San Diego State
UCR (pending grades)
Waitlist:
Syracuse
Oregon State
Rejected:
Brown
IWW
UNLV
Nothing (and for all that money I spent for fees, I wish I would've gotten a glossy catalogue or something shiny to look at):
VCU
Hollins
@Everyone,
It's been a pleasure sharing hopes, dreams, and agonies with you all. I don't wish this process more than once on anyone; my boyfriend would probably dump me if I had to go through this a second time around: "What? Why are you making lists of area codes?" "Why do you need more than one spreadsheet?" "Do you really need to stalk more than ONE blog?" "No, your writing is not crap." "You should really stop drinking. When your lips swell to more than 3 times their original size, it means you're having an allergic reaction." "I think your professors are tired of you calling them at their home numbers."
Congratulations to all and good luck to those brave enough to re-apply.
I'm going to go get me some duck lips now.
Anyone have any UNCG updates?
I was trying to hold off a little longer on e-mailing Jim, as I assume he's rather busy.
@Kevin
No updates for UNCG. I e-mail Jim this morning. No word back. Ho Hum.
@ Chelsea, Kevin
I assume he's running around campus looking under couch cushions to find some money for us.
@Lucas
Too true. haha
Alex,
You're awesome! We're all awesome :-D
@pdg, inkli, any other Indiana waitlisters:
Got a polite e-mail from Indiana this afternoon, saying they filled all their fiction spots this morning. So, I guess I wasn't meant to be a Hoosier, as much as I wanted to be one.
Jasmine and M.Fit: I wish I were joining you in Bloomington this fall.
Dejected and despondent now. I put so much energy into hoping (God, I'd even looked into housing near IU, just in case) - and now I just feel hollow and exhausted.
@phillywriter
Got the same email. Keep yer head up bud!
phillywriter
Sorry to hear you won't be joining us in Bloomington. I was looking forward to it. Good luck!
@ Old Poet:
I didn't know Henri Cole is at Ohio State now!!!
He's an AMAZING professor. He taught my undergrad poetry courses (although I'm sure he's pretty stoked to be out of undergrad - we were a rough bunch, and there were a lot of tears (not from me, though)). Yay I'm so excited for you! He's such a great poet and a great teacher.
Re: UNLV
A know very little, but there is this: a friend of mine is a current student in the program and absolutely loves it. She has a TAship and is now looking over her abroad options.
:::Sigh::: I love Henri Cole!
I'm going to go re-read his book now.
@Tory & Alex
Getting ready to teach some freshman comp in a few minutes but will definitely email you both soon...probably later today or tomorrow.
Decision made!
Going to UNH. So excited and can't wait!
Congrats and best of luck to everyone!
@OldPoet,
congrats on choosing OSU! :-) I'll see you there in the fall. :-)
And I'd not think twice about being a blubbering mess on the phone with Henri ... he woke me up when he called on a Sunday morning. So I am sure I win the award for being least coherent on the phone with faculty at OSU. lol. I just hope I didn't say anything too weird while half-awake!
and ... @Alex and @Tory, some lovin' for you two OSU'ers as well. :D
someone who knows my email, kick me into the exchange w OldPoet, please. I'm too chicken to post my contact details publicly.
You know what I suggest for those last minute, mind-boggling, 11th-hour acceptances that make your decision extremely difficult?
A combination of retail therapy, cookie-making, and TV marathons. Mmmm. Tonight will be fun.
Was offered (off the waitlist) and turned down a funded fiction spot at Western Michigan. The program seems great and I hope it makes someone here happy!
So I am on a unofficial waitlist for Eastern Washington University for Fiction. I emailed them yesterday asking how my chances were looking and I have heard nothing. Everyone I know is telling me to call and ask but I feel like I would be that nagging crazy person. Is this a good idea or should I wait it out some more?
I decided to turn down my (unfunded) Mankato State spot. I emailed them to withdraw my name from their admissions list. Short while later I received an email back saying that, if it was okay with me, they'd keep me on their list in case any assistantships opened up later on. It went on to say that if none opened up this year, I could always just defer enrollment and reapply for assistantships next year.
I thought that was kind of nice. Made this decision a little easier.
@red
Thanks, that's quite an exciting vote of confidence for Nick Taylor. Was that class you took with him at SJSU, or when he was a MFA student in Virginia, or somewhere else?
Cheers,
Daniel
Dude, Phillywriter, ridiculously bummed about Indiana. How's LSU coming along??? (you're 1st on the wait list there, right?).
@LA Swede: where are you! Any word from Notre Dame? I expected an email from them today telling me they had filled their spot. Keeping the hope alive! Actually, I'm hoping for someone to drop out late ;D. Mean of me, I know...
Congrats to all the acceptances today!!
phillywriter,
i can commiserate, having received a similar email :(
i'm going to call montana to make one more attempt at trying to attain a teaching assistantship.. and if that falls through, i'll be doing this all over again next year.
So it's the end of the day, sort of. Business hours, at least.
Still nothing from UNCG?
I can't take much more of this.
well, others may have just received the same email from U Wash a few minutes ago saying "sorry, we've filled our class, we'd like to keep your app on file for a year" ... so if anyone was waiting, they're done in poetry at least.
now to go tell them nevermind, again.
Hi folks - just got my final news from Michigan, where I was on the waitlist: shut out exactly one spot from being accepted.
Naturally I am disappointed (to put it mildly), but I would like to use this situation to illustrate how down-to-the-wire this process can be, and to encourage everyone who is re-applying next year to take this into account. What if my personal statement had been a little better? My statement of purpose? Just one poem a little better worked over? I might be heading to Ann Arbor. Of course, I realize luck and subjective factors characterize this process, but my application wasn't perfect. Work hard to develop your samples and I think we will all have a much better shot next year.
I also encourage everyone who is forced to re-apply not to lose hope - I am determined not to be defeated, and I think that's most of the fight. I believe many of us who put care into our applications and got poor results ended up getting unlucky like this; I just happen to know how close I came.
My writing has improved since I applied in the winter. It is going to continue improving in the time I have before fall. There is no doubt about this. Instead of taking the attitude that a ten-story wave has finally crashed over me, I am just going to do the only viable thing: get better.
I wish everyone here who is still receiving news best of luck. As for me, I'll be seeing some of you again in the fall.
Peace!
@ Daniel
I took a beginning writing class with him while he was an MFA student at UVA. He always kept the discussions focused and provided great feedback to all of us. He even had the whole class over to his house for dinner at the end of the semester.
I've run into him a few times in the bay area, and he was kind enough to answer some of my questions when I started on this crazy application process. I imagine he'll be a wonderful mentor for you. Best of luck!
Baja Fresh is selling their burritos for $2 (via a Facebook coupon) in honor of CGS Resolution Day (which happen to coincide with Tax Day). Hope you took advantage. I did.
@Woon,
did i miss it? who did you choose?
Anyone giving up NYU poetry?
That's all I got.
It would be nice not to endure this process again, but perhaps it is meant to be. Now I am wiser and can apply to a better list of schools that fit me.
I'm thrilled to say that yesterday I went to a reading by my favorite contemporary poet and had an amazing chat with her. She wants to read my work! AHH!
Woon chose salsa verde.
Ultimo Burrito (chicken). I usually take advantage of their salsa bar by making multiple trips. Gallons, man, I'm talking gallons. I think every time I visit Baja Fresh, they lose money.
I really hope Woon chose carnitas.
You need to take advantage of real Mexican food Woon - you live in CA!!
@M.Swann,
I guess that just leaves me to guess which of woon's three schools is in an area with the best salasa verde ... colorado state? florida? purdue? .... i'm guessing florida?
@Woon,
I'll miss your lunch updates.
Any thoughts on which city you might be grabbing your lunches in the fall?
@Koru
Omg, now I'm in a panic! I'm waiting for fiction at UW! I emailed Judy yesterday and what I heard back for fiction was:
"At this point we know we have 6 fiction students coming and still haven't heard from 4 other people who received offers. If all 4 decide not to come then I'm guessing the committee will be making at least 2 offers to the waitlist folks. I will let them know that you are still interested in coming. Again, txs for your patience! Judy"
I'm crossing my fingers, starting a prayer chain and considering a small animal sacrifice. Okay not really, my dog is too cute to sacrifice. Commence the stress!
I was kinda shocked that Nick Taylor invited his students over to his house while at UVa. Now, I'll feel pressured to invite my students over to my 1 bed/1 bath apt in grad student housing.
Filed taxes today, got an email rejection from Syracuse two months late, bought a new Intelligentsia roast (Los Inmortales, El Salvador: Finca Matalapa, Guayabo), tried to do a handstand in yoga (fell, bruised my shin), made some Moroccan carrot soup, cut open a mini water melon (too watery, too early), and invited some friends to my Korean BBQ birthday next week.
As a Chicagoan, I will side with Rick Bayless: we might have the best Mexican food in America.
btw, phillywriter & others, i can't wait to meet you at iowa in fall 2011.
@M. Swann - what's the difference between a regular birthday and a Korean BBQ birthday?
Also, there are days when I step into El Pollo Loco, I feel like I'm in Mexico.
Less pickled cabbage birthday cake.
@ Woon
Just have your students meet you at the local Chipotle. Maybe they'll even let you reserve a booth.
I've never seen a booth at a Chipotle. Just tall tables and tall stools with people eating dinosaur egg burritos.
@ inkli__11 - You know it!!
@ M Swann - I don't understand this concept of gourmet Mexican food a la Bayless. Similar to the idea of expensive Asian food. Puzzling - the good stuff is cheap. However, I am interested in showing up to your birthday if there is pork belly and a side dish of anchovies involved.
Bayless opened Xoco last year, his take on cheap Mexican street food. You can get out of there for under $10, if you bypass the hot chocolate (which you shouldn't; it's toDIVA [sorry]). Chicago has plenty of great (and cheap) Mexican food, but when I went to Frontera Grill and told my waiter I liked mole, she brought a MOLE FLIGHT to my table, unprompted. Yum!
But hey, everyone's invited to my Korean BBQ birthday (I am not certain about pork belly availability [I am certain about anchovies--they will be there and they will be delicious])!
@M. Swann - Is "Swann" a popular surname in Korea, like Kim and Park?
Am I the only one who thinks Barbara Anderson (of "Ironside" and seven episodes of "Mission: Impossible" (Season 7)) is HOT?
Woon
She's totally on an episode of Star Trek I just watched. And no, not lighting my loins.
@woon, actually I like Emmanuelle Beart better. I am partial to brunettes, not blondes.
For data research/posterity/fellow longtime MFA Blog stalkers, the list I can now officially post:

Congrats, Anna!
Hi--I didn't think I'd do this, but since the information seems to help if you're in an uncertain funding/waitlist situation, I just declined funded spots in Fiction at:
UC San Diego
CalArts
UC Davis
So maybe funding will open up for some people?
I'm going to Columbia, where they offered full tuition--just fyi, because I know that there are rumors that there's more or less no funding there.
Not sure if I've posted this info on here before, but here's my finalized list for Seth (with results):
Rejection:
University of Alabama
University of Michigan
Purdue University
Southern Illinois University
Virginia Tech University
University of Wyoming
Wait-List:
University of Arkansas (sorta)
University of Illinois
Indiana University
Accepted (& Attending):
Ohio State University (via waitlist)
Swann as in du côté de chez Swann, I think
Accepted to my 2ndary choice concentration, nonfiction, at The New School, waitlisted in primary concentration choice, fiction. this feels good! have until may to decide. about 20% merit aid.
probably am not going to go...i really want to move and get started, and i think the new school has a great program in terms of faculty and alumni, but there's some negatives too and i'm not sure it's that right "fit." i have learned so much from all of you about how i could improve my writing and application, i think it might be in my best interest to wait a year.
@alexandra, congrats! i'm really interested in going to columbia. i'm wondering if you could tell me anythign about your application? like, did you have a lot of teaching or publishing experience or something outside of your writing sample that you think contributed to your funding package? or do you think it was based on just the sample alone? would love to hear your thoughts.
So, who's coming back next year :D
I'm actually really excited about next year, just really impatient. Like, really impatient. Don't know what I'm going to do when I have no blog to obsess over. I really think that those who didn't receive good news this year will have fabulous results next year, especially those with some bomb-diggety wait lists like Michigan, Indiana, and LSU. Imagine what a stronger sample will do!! I know for me, I'm optimistic. Cautiously optimistic of course, I mean this whole thing taught me to expect NOTHING, and I mean NOTHING.
Ugh, I year is a long way away though. It's torture all over again!
@Susan
I'm not sure exactly what it was. I'm ABD at a critical theory doctoral program and have had teaching experience, but they don't offer teaching so I doubt that's it. I think it was a combination of sample and compatible interests, and possibly a big donation that came into the program a couple years ago? I know I was accepted 3 years ago and got a fraction of the funding.
I've heard mixed things about the program, but two of my favorite authors who are on the faculty called me and said very reassuring things about the feel of the department, etc. So I'll go for it & be the guinea pig!
Best to you in your decisions!
I'm afraid everyone will leave the blog after today and I won't get the joy of posting my final list. So, decision still pending:
Accepted:
Emerson
CCA
George Mason (off waitlist)
Wait-Listed:
George Mason (became acceptance)
Rejected:
Iowa NWP
Arizona
Michigan (poetry)
Indiana (poetry)
UMass-Amherst (poetry)
UVA (poetry)
I'm deciding currently between Emerson and George Mason. Wish me luck! I'll be around on here still, if anyone'll still be around as well. But I've really enjoyed this community, and I'm glad I found it. I've made lasting friends on here, and have felt very very supported. Thank you all for everything!
@kaybay - You said it! I'll be back on the blog in the fall, so we can jam about our 5-6 acceptances each when the time comes.
@Kaybay,
I just did the most retarded thing ever in the history of MFA applicants: I turned down a funded spot and accepted a non-funded one. I'm attending the NEOMFA without funding (unless more $ becomes available for the English department, as I was very close on the funding waitlist).
Yes, I feel like a moron.
But the bottom line was this: I couldn't take my kids to Florida, after all, and I am not willing to go without them, either.
I just want to say this entire process has SUCKED. When you add personal/locational constraints on top of the stress of just plain applying, waiting, etc. -- well, it's really no fun at all.
So I'll be taking out loans and working my fool head off. Hooray for me! How awesome to be stuck in Cleveland.
Anyone Chicago-bound?
I've decided to reapply. I've turned down all offers, and got to defer my offer from SFSU until next year.
@Mr. Orange
@Anyone else who got into Irvine Fiction
My goal, in reapplying is UCI, and I was hoping, perhaps, if you'd be willing to share manuscripts? I would just like to see what worked for UCI.
My email is scribble87 [at] gmail if you'd like to help out. Thanks!
@kevin - that's awesome that SF State is letting you defer for a year, but hopefully you'll make it to the land of Peter the Anteater :)
did you hear back from long beach yet by any chance? (don't mind me, i'm just obsessing...)
Bummer, Lauren :( maybe some last minute funding will come through and it'll work out for the best. It's funny, because I actually didn't think you'd be able to leave your kids and move 1000 miles away (or however long it is), so I guess I saw it coming. If funding doesn't come this year, is it an option next year, or is it unfunded for-e-ver? Also, Clevelend. At least it's not Detroit :D
I've posted my list for Seth at some point in this process, but it really feels good to do it with the results today, as opposed to exactly one year ago, when I reported across-the-board rejection. One year can make all the difference in the world.

@Kaybay,
Well, I asked and didn't get a response (yet) regarding my chances of getting funding next year or the year after that. I suspect that they really can't say what the odds are, given the funding cuts all the universities are having to deal with. Of course my hope is I'll be so super awesome that I'll find a way to get funding for year #2 and #3.
And no, it's not Detroit :) Thank God -- since there is no MFA program in Detroit!
Congrats, Courtney, what a success!
And congrats all the people I've been remiss about...keeping up is hard business.
Courtney, you rock, seriously. I'm so happy that everything worked out for you. You're an inspiration to all of us reapplying :) Thanks for being so freaking awesome! And you too Lauren and Trilbe and Brandi Wells (whatever happened to her? Sippin' mint juleps in Tuscaloosa I guess), and Sarah, and Frankish, and... jeez, too many awesome people here... Koru, Mommy J, Emma, Peaquah, Digapony, Mostly Swell, Eli, Ashley Brooke, LA Swede, Phillywriter, Inkli... and anyone else I so callously missed :( you guys rock!
Special thanks to everyone who swapped samples with me. Now give me my oscar ;)

Rejected: Iowa, WashU, Syracuse, Montana, Columbia, Oregon, Florida, Vanderbilt, George Mason, ASU, LSU, Wyoming, Penn State, Purdue, Mississippi, Alabama
Unclear: UNCG (asked if I'd still be interested without funding, I said no)
To anyone still in wait list purgatory: Good Luck!!!
LOL at the best Mexican food being in Chicago. Sorry, but until you have taken a trip down to South Texas (San Antonio and Corpus Christi) you have no idea what real Mexican food even tastes like. I don't even think you can appreciate a tortilla until an old Mexican grandmother has sat you down with fresh tortillas on your plate. Chicago? The Midwest? Please. As in, please come down to South Texas so I can blow your mindhole. :)
Love ya KB! Thanks Jasmine!
re: Mexican food
There are so many cuisines from Mexico, we'd first have to narrow down what we're talking about. In my experience so far, Los Angeles has some of the best Mexican food in the states, but I'm not sure it represents all of the Mexican cuisines.
That said, Rick Bayless cooks some of the best Mexican or Mexican-inspired food I've ever tasted. I'd gladly eat at one of his restaurants over anywhere in LA or Texas that I can think of off the top of my head.
Cheers!
So, I'm about 2500 comments behind, but made it through this new mailbag today. AWP was pure awesomeness, and I've honestly been at home depressed that it had to end. Made so many new friends, hung with my new cohort, and heard so many amazing poets (Carolyn Forché, Jean Valentine, Matthew Dickman, Sherman Alexie, Nick Flynn). It's hard to go back to the real world where poetry and friends are spread far more thin.
BUT I wanted to say congratulations to everyone who has made decisions and/or made it off the waitlists. I am still crossing my fingers for phillywriter and kaybay (sigh!). Everyone keep in touch. Maybe I'll rename the Limbo site and keep it open as a CW program forum.
I'm generally thinking of Jalisco style Mexican food. Obviously there are many different varieties of Mexican food belonging to different regions. But I have to say my South Texas pride is strong. We are the taco capital of the world! Now I am off for some barbacoa.
I typically think of Tex-Mex when I think of Mexican food in the States, and I'd have to say, yes, Texas is where you find the best of it. HOWEVER, Houston's Tex-Mex (I forgot the name of the restaurant, it's been a few years) edged out San Antonio's, in my own opinion.
I hope there's some good Tex-Mex somewhere in Chicago. Any suggestions?
I am so bummed. I was an idiot and somehow applied for the wrong full residency MFA program at UC Riverside. The kind program coordinator said she'll ask the graduate division if they can use my submitted application for the program I wanted to apply to. I'm not holding out much hope though. Since I can't leave Cali, this was my last chance to start school this fall. =(
Looks like I'm reapplying this year. I know I don't post much, but I'm looking forward to seeing some familiar faces (screennames?) around. You guys are awesome.
Um, just to jump on the Mexican food conversation...Hello, Arizona wins! Soooo good.
Also, even though I live in Washington, my boyfriend's mother is from Mexico and cooks for us all the time so I don't have to miss out on the goodness. Yeeeessssss.
Much love to everyone here, those accepted and those returning next year. I have enjoyed the virtual company of all of you!
My final list, in fiction, which is so exciting to post!
Accepted:
Oregon State (fully funded, off the waitlist, attending!)
Idaho
Minnesota @ Mankato
Northern Michigan (MA, fully funded)
Wichita State (fully funded)
Waitlisted:

Rejected:
Iowa, Michigan, Wisconsin, Southern Illinois, New Mexico, Oregon, Colorado State

Thanks for all the well-wishes, everyone. LSU is my last hope, but I haven't heard from them yet. They indicated via e-mail two days ago that they would keep me posted, since I'm #1 on the waitlist, but I haven't heard anything.
So, it looks like I'll probably be playing this game again next year. But at least I'll have some of you kind and encouraging people going through it with me again.
Congrats DigAPony!!! I'm in Portland right now. We had sun today!
Hopefully, the volcanic ashes from Iceland will have scattered and dispersed by late April so that they don't interfere with my apartment-hunting flight plans to my target MFA college town.
@ Kaybay and Summer -
I'll be here next year, too, unless I decide to be crazy and go to law school. Yes, I applied to writing programs and law school in the same year. And I was actually accepted to some law schools... More than likely, though, I'll be back.
amanda, I definitely think that the MFA Limbo site should be kept going!
Also the MFA Chronicles blog is welcoming new contributors. I'm definitely going to start posting there and hope to see some other people from this blog there, too :)
Talk about eleventh-hour salvation: I was just accepted to LSU off the waitlist via e-mail just before midnight (Eastern time)!
I'm in complete shock.
I was resigning myself to applying again next year. Wow.
Skiptomylou - Did you decide to go to LSU? If so, we should talk. And Adam, we should talk, too! Looking forward to meeting you in Baton Rouge this fall! Both of you (or anyone else headed to LSU), please feel free to e-mail me at jlbrosseau at gmail.
Thanks again to all of you for your support. I really had given up on this year.
Congrats to all of you headed to MFA programs in the fall, and I'm sending positive wishes for eleventh-hour miracles for the rest of you!
OH MY GOD! phillywriter!
So excited to be the first to congratulate you! Seriously, seriously, congrats. I can't even imagine how excited you are. Woohoo! Way to go!
Phillywriter
Drop me a line if you get to NYC. Maybe you can come to a reading at Brookyn College. sublissimes(@) yahoo.
yeeeeaaaAAH phillywriter! I'm smiling real big for you right now - that's so cool. Haha, wow, just before midnight! Congratulations!!! You must be in a bit of a doozy, eh? So exciting. Wow, yeah, congrats!
So what are you going to do now to celebrate?!!!
Phillywriter! I'm so excited for you! Congrats! You must be so excited! Be proud of yourself, too!!
phillywriter!! Congratulations! I was rooting for you. :D
Hi Everyone,
First of all I am so so excited my Professor,recommendor has won the Pulitzer for fiction...and here so far away I have no one other then family to share this news with!!!!!
He inspired me to apply for an MFA all the way from India...:)
I am finally taking up the Pacific University Low residency MFA.
Best of luck to all of you. And you guys have been like an extended family to me in the past few months...
phillywriter!!!!!!!!!!!!!! yay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
YAYYYYY Phillywriter! We were all rooting for you!
I already sent you an email, but still:
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
LSU- You did the right thing!!!
CONGRATS!!!
phillywriter, you embody the best of our dreams!
@phillywriter
Hell yeah! Congratu-fucking-lations! I'm a little bummed we won't be meeting you at IU, but you majorly scored with LSU. And majorly earned it.
@Lisa
I haven't heard from Long Beach yet, but I talked to one of the professors there. She said they started sending out notifications, so it won't be long now.
Congrats, Phillywriter!!!!!!!! I'm so happy for you!!!
@threes and Andrew:
Threes- HUGE MAJOR THANKS! I got offered a spot at Western Michigan (fiction) off the wait-list. So nice to come home to that message after a really crappy shift at Starbucks (except for the having to move away from my fiance part. And the part where I may have told an unfunded but exciting program that I'll be attending, but didn't sign any paperwork yet.) Anyway, I'll call tomorrow to find out the details, but I also realized I don't know a huge amount about their program. Will you guys tell me what you know?
Western Michigan (funded) versus VCFA Children and YA program (unfunded). Such totally different programs. Moving away from my fiance if I go to Western, but getting funding and getting to quit Starbucks versus having to pay many monies and keep my crappy Starbucks job, but still live with my fiance and write YA, which I love, if I attend VCFA. Halp?
Congrats, Phillywriter!
Lauren,
Congrats on your decision even if the money situation sucks. At least you're in state! I REALLY hope they're able to find you funding. I think you'll like working with Imad Rahman. And if you don't, there are a million other people on faculty at all the schools. And hey... you get to use that new student center they've been telling me about since I was a sophomore and are just now finishing. And you can go to Becky's and like, pretend to be me.
Congratulations to everyone whose gotten in!
PHILLYWRITER!!!
Every time I come on this blog, I've been rooting for you!
@phillywriter - HUGE CONGRATS!
@ Tory-- What's up!
@Woon-- where are you going? I don't know you, but for some reason I need to know. If you tell us, I will send you a lock of my hair. It will help with your voodoo.

...And I've never been more excited to write! Until next year- Congrats and future luck to all!
Phillywriter, I'm so glad for you! What a great story!
And fellow UNCG-ers - I spoke with Jim yesterday and for the fiction side, they could only offer one funded position. As much as it killed me to do so, I had to turn down their offer. I am a believer in the Gospel of Seth and I would rather wait a year and reapply then pile more debt on top of my existing debt right now.
So I guess I'll see some of you next year! And for the rest of you who are heading to programs - make us proud!
Phillywriter--huge congratulations!!! Very happy for you.
Kyle--I commiserate, but at the same time that is a wonderful post; you are inspiring me to get past my disappointment and look forward to more writing!
@phillywriter
YES!!!!!
My stomach literally sank when I saw the bad news about Indiana...
So stoked for you!
Congrats!
YES! Big congrats to phillywriter!
Awesome, phillywriter, enjoy Baton Rouge. :)
Chrissy-
I feel your pain. My only current offer (NC State) is unfunded too. I understand the debt argument completely, but I think I'll probably take the offer anyway.
I'm about 15 years behind schedule getting this degree. I'll be 40 by the time I graduate. I can make up the money (eventually), but I can't make up the time at this point.
Good luck next year!
Thanks, Henry. Good luck in your program! I'm only 27 and this was my first year applying, so I feel like I've got some wiggle room. Plus I have a good job and a great writing community at the university where I work (I'm a librarian) so I think this is the best choice for me.
Chrissy H. (Don't know why Blogger lost the H. Weird.)

So, I just got the email - Iowa State's full up, and I'm on the wrong side of the waitlist door. So, my final list:
Accepted:
Stonecoast (already declined)
Alaska - Anchorage (already declined)
Chatham (will most likely decline)
Mills (gorgeous campus, great people, but will most likely decline)
Montana (probably going here)
Waitlist, followed by cold cold rejection:
Iowa State
All in CNF.
@ Elissa-
Congrats! So happy to hear that. I obviously can't speak to VCFA, YA lit, or your fiance, but Western Michigan seems pretty great - small program, 3 funded years, seems like they're pretty open to crossgenre and other sorts of experimentation. They're pretty helpful and honest - I would call them up and ask how they feel about YA lit. congrats again!
@Seth
Final count:
Accepted:
University of South Carolina (TAship) (attending)
Idaho
UT-Knoxville MA
Rejected:
FSU
Alabama
Arkansas
LSU
Mississippi
Georgia
I read your open letter and feel like I understand your argument much better. That kid JD that was commenting was funny since I knew you had already gotten your law degree and he asked if you had ever read case law. I like the idea that through state public school the government is funding the arts. I hadn't thought about it that way before.
Thanks for your help Seth. I've been reading your advice since November.
@Phillywriter--a very fun and inspiring turn of events. Congratulations!
@Nefertitti-congrats on Pacific...I will be doing low res at Fairfield
@Everyone-congrats to all who have received good news and good luck to those busy writing for next year
@Woon-you're very secretive aren't you?
re: woon's plans
unless his post about iceland's volcanic ash was a joke, it sounds as though he's u.k.-bound, yes?
re: woon. I'm pretty sure that only about every sixth message Woon writes is serious. And those are the ones about food.
@amanda - true, but they're so much fun to read! (whether food related or otherwise)
& @kevin - thanks, man! the lovely doris at the grad desk is only at liberty to say that "files are still under review." sounds like there's some unofficial waitlist action, which makes sense since some folks on the blog will be/have been turning down spots, but two more weeks is an awful long time to wait just to hear if you were part of the "NO" pile all along... [/end rant/]
Phillywriter
Congrats!!! I just saw your news. Our posts must have crossed last night. Talk about last minute. Good Luck in Baton Rouge.
Heads up, folks! Hollins is finally sending out rejections via email.
Thank you for the closure, Hollins. FINALLY. I'm sad that you don't love me as much as I love you, but I'm glad to know.
Phillywriter
Congratulations! I was sending out positive vibes for you almost every day. I have been hoping that you would hear good news. Im so happy for you!
Here is my final list in fiction (and it hurts to type cause I sliced my finger nail and some finger off cooking the other night):
Accepted:
Old Dominion (with TA)
?:
UNCG (got one of those "Hey dude, you still want us to try to find you a spot?" emails last week...I declined)
Big ole two palms pressed to the lips farting sound:
Indiana
Alabama
LSU
Ole Miss
BGSU
Arkansas
SIUC
No word:
VCU
Actually, I have it from a confidential source that VCU spent my app fee on a fat sack and used my samples to roll up huge, bad tasting doobies.
Ad Com Dude 1: *puff* *puff* That's some good shit. *puff* The herb, I mean, not the writing.
Ad Com Dude 2: *cough* *cough* True that.
Ad Com Dude 1: Man...I'm hungry. Let's go to Moe's.
OK, I'm done.
So is anyone considering going to UNC-G despite the funding limitations?
Julia,
If given the chance, I totally would. My only other offer is also unfunded and I'm getting too old to wait another year.
According to a vague email from Jim Clark last week, I'm still in the running (though no mention of any official waitlist or anything). If he called me today with an offer, though, I'd be very happy.
If I were ten years younger I might pass until I could find something funded, but as-is I'm chomping at the bit for anything.
@ Henry
I'd imagine you've got a pretty solid chance. Acceptees who have other offers are jumping ship and the rest of us have to seriously evaluate what our options are. I hope that works out in your favor! Do you have to commit to the other program soon?
@ Julia
I'm out of state (though I'm a native North Carolinian) so it would be 17K just for tuition for me in the first year. Jim cautioned me against paying for the first year, because he says it makes it nearly impossible to get any funding for your second. New money won't be spent on a student who has shown a willingness to pay, but instead will be spent luring new students to the program.
So, I would pack up and move tomorrow if I got some money, but it's too much debt without the funding.
@Julia, Lucas, Henry
UNCG was my first choice and my only acceptance. But I just can't accrue any more debt (I'm also out of state, and itching to get out of Texas). Jim did say I could defer my acceptance until next year in the hopes that there will be more money then, which means I would only have to semi-reapply - no application, no fee, but I'd have to update my sample and LOR and an in would not be entirely guaranteed.
Again though - I'm young(ish) and can afford to wait. But oh, Greensboro, we would have been wonderful together!
Chrissy H
Thank you, Threes!
Thanks Julia,
That's kinda what I'm hoping too- though it does feel a little slimy to possibly gain an opportunity through the disappointment of others.
NC State was pretty vague, saying they hoped I could confirm, but not giving a solid date. I imagine they'd be more demanding if I were receiving funding. So, no huge rush (but still the uncertainty about the future is wearing me down a bit!)
Now that I got my Hollins rejection, I can finally update and finish my spreadsheet. Jeez. That one's been driving my OCD up the wall.
Has anyone gotten their official rejection from Oregon yet? I think it's kinda weird that I haven't gotten mine.
Julia, Henry, Lucas, Chrissy, and any other UNCG peeps --
Like Henry, I received the somewhat vague GNE from Jim Clark last week. If admitted I'd love to accept, but I really don't want to pay the out of state tuition. It's just so darn expensive. Like everybody else, I worked my tail off, put together a great application, and I need some funding. Anyway, wishing you all the best with your decisions, whatever they may be.
Hey all,
I've had a great time on this blog. Your support and struggles have been amazingly comforting as I've gone through my own process. Congrats to everyone who's gotten good news this season (especially Phillywriter! Seriously, you just caught a ridiculous Hail Mary pass!). And to everyone who'll be applying another year, you have my respect and admiration for wanting to go through this whole insane process again. But even though the application season has been heartbreaking and crazy, this community has helped make all the anxiety not only bearable, but actually enjoyable.
I'll be headed to UMass Boston this fall, so anyone who'll be in the Boston area should feel free to drop me a line. I've also put together a long post of my thoughts on the whole process (with my final list, which I don't think I've ever posted on this site). April 15th has come and gone, so it's past time for me to be unsubscribing, if only to save my poor overburdened thunderbird the 500 posts a day.
Finally, something inspired me to create a MFA Blog occasional poem for the end of the season. I'm a fiction writer, not a poet (with very good reason). But hopefully it captures the sentiments of the moment.
