Why so many "where are you applying?" posts? There have been 3 in the last couple weeks.

I feel like some secret data is being collected... conspiracy? ;)

I thought it was well known that seth uses these posts to collect data about who applies where and what kind of acceptances come in, etc. So yes, data is being collected!

@c-raw

you should re-post your question in the mailbag post. this thread is supposed to be mostly just for lists and isn't as frequently visited as the mailbag.

@blob

sorry about that.

I, too, posted this a few months ago, but since then it has become official (I sent in my very last app about 10 minutes ago - yay!) so I'll post it again. It's for poetry:

Minnesota

Austin (Michener)
Cornell
Brown
Washington in St. Louis
Michigan
Iowa
Virginia
Syracuse
Vanderbilt
Johns Hopkins

All pretty competitive programs, but go big or go home! (We will see if I'm still saying that in March, heh)

Here's my list:

Fiction:
-Brown
-Vanderbilt
-Oregon
-JHU
-BU
-UNH
-Emerson

And for good measure:
MA Lit:
-Brandeis

I'm not expecting much. I was a little late getting into this ridiculous MFA game, and was horrified to see comparisons being made to getting into Harvard Med School or Yale Law. To think of the art form I've admired for so long, reduced to cutthroat admissions and an ugly dose of elitism. It literally made me sick to my stomach. Oh well. I should've expected it. It's the game. Play and lose. So it goes. (That's my one allotted Vonnegutism for the day)

The only hope I think I have is if my sample and statement is well received, and that's pretty much everyone else's hope too. Blurgh. Who knows? I'm used to being the Brady to everyone's Reagan ... used to all that bad luck and misfortune. Question is: who is going to be my Hinckley this time? All of them, mayhap? We'll see. BANG! and I'm down. Draft a law for me.

Speaking of which, does anyone know how to upload the Academic writing sample + Teaching philosophy + TA app in the online thing? The philosophy and app need to be in the same file, not sure how to do that, but then there's only one upload box for 2 files.

Help would be appreciated... I'm 1-day shipping my stuff tomorrow and this online thing is all that's left.

@ Allison Leigh Peters

I applied to Columbia College in Chicago but I'll admit I don't know much about it. It's only 2 hours from where I currently live and I have a few friends who go to CC for other art degrees...they're always working on really unique innovative art projects and they seem to have a lot of support from the school. I'm hoping the MFA is the same way...no idea about funding. Chicago is a cool city...more affordable than NYC but def not by much.

Let me know if you find any info...I don't see the program talked about very often on the blogs or other sites.

If I get everything completed that I need to today, here's all the schools I applied to in fiction.

Hunter
West Virginia
VCU
Southern Illinois University at Carbondale
UNCG
UNCW
Arizona State
Purdue
Idaho
Boise State
McNeese
Arkansas
Florida
GMU

I think if I get into Purdue or Arkansas (or somehow won the lottery and got into Hunter on the same day)I would have an aneurysm of joy and die. But I'd go to any of these schools in a heartbeat--I figure it doesn't matter where I'll live because I'll be so obscenely busy I won't have a life outside of school, anyway.

Oh, and those of you applying to Virginia Commonwealth University: I went there for undergrad and I've taken workshops with several of the MFA faculty there. I interned at their writing center (where many MFA students work) and I've lived in Richmond my whole life. If you have any questions about VCU or life in Richmond, feel free to e-mail me.

Good luck!

I know this is off topic, but since a lot of people are applying to McNeese I think it's important to know that the e-mail posted on their website for fiction applications is no longer monitored, since Mr. Connelly seems to have left their faculty. I was informed to resubmit my application to ataylor1@mcneese.edu, so anyone that made the same mistake should do likewise.

Hi everyone,

Not sure which mailbag to put this in, or where data is being collected for statistic purposes, but just wanted to let you know I got my first rejection email. It was from University of East Anglia (Norwich, England). Since they are in England, I'm not sure they follow the normal app timelines. They said you can apply anytime but suggest as early as possible in the previous year. I sent mine in mid-December, around Dec. 20th. Got the email this morning (jan 20) with a hard copy letter to follow in the mail.

Oh well, 1 down, 14 to go!

This school has been wonderful for me since I have moved to three different states in the last three years. I start their Masters program in March, which is also amazing because I can start whenever I want, any month. I wanted to study at a campus but found my lifestyle too chaotic to even consider a low residency, let alone a full-time campus.

I recommend it for military, or busy workers, or stay at home moms. Wonderful pace, wonderful content.

ckc said...

@ Sarah, thanks for sharing and that's too bad about the University of East Angliea, but like you said, you still have a long list. On the bright side and MFA is a terminal degree and an MA is not, so in a way getting into an MFA program (though it doesn't give you great job prospects), will give you better job pospects than an MA.

The best of luck with your other schools.

Is it strange to already be worrying about rejections/ acceptances? Because I am. A lot.

Also, perhaps someone on here may be able to give me some advice. I'm finished applying, but that means that I have a lot of exhausted professors who have written me letters of recommendation and I'm trying to think of what I should do to thank them. I don't feel that sending a nice card is enough. Does anyone have ideas or experience with this issue? I should probably add that I am abroad, which complicates matters quite a bit from my end.

callastem, I think it does indeed mean we should be friends. It will be interesting to see which programs we make it into with such similar choices!
