The Creative Writing MFA Handbook: A Guide for Prospective Students is available from Continuum Publishing in March 2006 (update: December 2005). The Handbook offers an overview of the graduate writing experience, profiles of fifty Creative Writing programs, advice about the application process, and insight into making the best choice of programs. There is a comprehensive list of all graduate writing programs, both in and outside the United States, a list of helpful sources on and offline, and interviews with teachers and students, including George Saunders, Aimee Bender, Geoffrey Wolff, and Tracy K. Smith. The book also contains information about M.A. programs, Ph.D. programs, and the increasingly popular Low-Residency programs.
In the meantime, I'm going to be publishing some tips, links, and commentary on this site, for the benefit of current applicants, and perhaps for the amusement, interest, and ire of former and current students and teachers. I'll update with new information each Monday and Thursday, beginning September 1st (correction: now). There are comments sections below each entry, and all insights and opinions are welcome.
