Pacific University's MFA Program

Paddling in Puddletown asks a question that I don't have an answer to. Maybe someone out there does? I'd appreciate any comments and observations. Thanks.

What can you tell me about Pacific University's low-residency MFA program?

I can tell you that it's fairly new -- graduating its first class this June. It seems to attract great visiting faculty -- everyone likes to spend summers in beautiful western Oregon. You can do the residency only option and check it out but it's an expensive little deal and doesn't count as credit toward the MFA unless you pay even MORE money for that option.

It has been hard to find out from Pacific who the ongoing faculty mentors are. There are no samples of courses or project materials on their web site.

Because I live nearby, I applied, was accepted very speedily but have decided to deferr admission until next January so I can do more detective work about the program and the folks who mentor/teach in it.

p.s. to say Pacific University was recently named one of the top five low-residency MFA programs in the country by The Atlantic Monthly.

I left a comment here when I was about halfway through my program and since then several people have taken me up on my offer to respond to questions about Pacific University.

This program has a stellar director, a diverse and talented faculty, and an overall supportive atmosphere.

Since I graduated from Pacific in 2007, I can affirm that it was one of the great times in my life. I met marvelous people, worked hard, produced solid work, grew as a writer, and would do it all over again in a heartbeat.

You won't have much trouble figuring out what's going on at Pacific these days. Check out the website: http://www.pacificu.edu/as/mfa/index.cfm

Or, you may still email me: andpride@pacifier.com
