The New School

A number of readers including Confuzzled in California have asked about The New School in New York.

What I know: It has an excellent faculty; it offers degrees in fiction, poetry, nonfiction, and children's writing; it costs over $20,000 a year; and there doesn't seem to be much opportunity for funding. I haven't heard much from former students: no red flags, no glowing recommendations.

I think we'd all appreciate comments from those in the know. Thanks in advance.

I was accepted to New School's program this year, but elected against it after talking to a few current students and others that were accepted this year. Those in the program liked it a lot, but really wished they didn't have to max-out student loans AND work just to pay for school. The reading series they have is just the best out there, the faculty are world-rockingly strong, but even with what they considered a very, very nice funding package, it was nowhere near covering tuition/living. If I was already living in NYC and had a good day job, I'd do it in a second; otherwise, I'd lump it in with the other two big, awesome, extremely underfunded programs in the city.

I took a summer workshop last year with Jonathan Dee, a novelist and New School professor (I think he may teach at Columbia, too). He was a fantastic teacher and possibly the most insightful reader I've had.

I took two workshops as a Rutgers undergrad w/ Elaine Equi, who teaches poetry at the New School. Very good poet, an even better teacher.

Can someone who has experience match up The New School's program vs. Hunter CUNY's program?

What are the other two big, awesome, extremely underfunded programs in the city? I can guess, but I am curious. Thank you!

Other two "big, awesome, underfunded" NY schools are Columbia and NYU or Sarah Lawrence.
