Love Richard Ford, but not sure I could live in Mississippi for two years. Though, to be fair to Mississippi, I don't have much firsthand knowledge of the place.
As a native Mississippian as well as a deeply liberal voter, I will gladly attest that Oxford is a great town — very progressive and literary-minded. In terms of amenities and excitement, of course it's no New York City, but neither is Missoula, Eugene, or Carbondale. It's a lovely place to live for three years, for anyone. Richard Ford will no doubt be a fabulous addition to the faculty. And anyone not applying to Ole Miss simply because it's in the South is really missing out.
As above... about the spoilers; yeese, does he want us to read it or not? Anyhoo, this sounds great, but I will be waiting for the paperback, hopefully, my memory will been cluttered up by peripherals and all will be forgotten. To get more info just check out plagiarism checker.

Alright! I'm glad I applied there.
