I have to ask, since I am applying late and panicking a little.

I see that some of you are applying to 10 or twelve programs - Tom recommends at least eight - Where are you all getting the money to apply like this? I know I need to "invest in my future" etc, but each seventy dollar app fee makes me die a little inside, not to mention the GRE forwarding fees. I would BANKRUPT myself applying like that...

Is there a loophole I don't know about?

Harris said...

Worrying already, but here are the placing I'm applying in fiction.

NM State
Texas State
Iowa State
Iowa Writers' Wkshp
Missouri, St Louis
Kansas
Indiana
Illinois
McNeese State

The Editor said...

MLeigh there were a few schools I applied to I was able to get application fee waivers which helped a lot. I received those from Iowa, Michigan, and Brown. I also applied to Vanderbilt simply because they don't require any type of application fee.

My list isn't very long due to the fact I'm pretty broke and can't imagine shelling out $70+ for each application. I'm applying to Hunter and their fee of $125 is killing me.

All CNF:

Minnesota
Iowa
Alabama
UNC Wilmington
Notre Dame
George Mason
Hollins
Montana

I'm taking things one deadline at a time and will probably apply to a few more schools.

@MLeigh I'm just surviving on ramen and peanut butter this month and really going to regret having put all this money on my credit card if I don't get in anywhere! oh well.

UNC Greensboro

Still outstanding (oops!)

Syracuse
Ole Miss
Oregon

I held off on these last five for financial reasons - as in I'm totally skint. Very nervous about the whole business now!

Alabama
UNC Wilmington

For fiction:

UNC-Greensboro

That's it. My husband's smack in the middle of a post-doc at Duke, and after having already done 3+ years of long-distance in our 10 years together, I opted to stay within driving distance, which left me with only one choice. Luckily, it was a school I would have applied to even if I were applying broadly. If it doesn't work out, I'll wait until my husband's done and apply again all over the place. Fingers crossed it works out this year, however.

@MLeigh

The whole process (I applied to 13 -- 9 MFA CW, 4 MA Lit) ended up costing me almost exactly $1200 -- Not an easy amount to spend for a 22-year-old. My money came from knowing for the past three years that I'd eventually be applying to grad school, so I'd been setting money aside in my savings account with each paycheck/refund check.

Maybe this has already been addressed, but what is the point of listing which schools we applied to? If for data collection, then I'd imagine it'd be difficult with people posting several times and what kind of sample set would it be anyhow? I might be missing something?
