Going by the rumor mill here and elsewhere online, OSU, USC, & Washington are already looking less likely--as I’ve yet to receive any news, while others have already gotten acceptances. . . . This is my 3rd official time around. And although I shouldn’t count the first two since it was years ago and I was far too young and writing samples representatively immature & unpolished, I’m still going to be quite broken if none of these pan out. . . . And damn those of you machine-gunners out there applying to 12, 15, 18, and 20+ schools! (I wish I had the cash to do that.)
Well, I just got my first reply -- an e-mail from Penn State. Looks like they're not taking anyone into the program based on lack of funding:
The English Department regretfully announces that beginning with the Fall 2012 admission cycle, it is no longer accepting applications for its MFA program. We are unable to provide funding for newly admitted students; therefore, the MFA faculty has decided not to recruit any new students. We are extremely sorry about the inconvenience and disappointment this decision may have caused you.
The Graduate School will refund the application fee for those individuals who submitted and paid for their English/MFA applications for the Fall 2012 semester and later. Individual applicants will not be notified directly that they have been refunded. Applicants who paid by credit card will see the refund on their next month’s statement. Those applicants who paid by check or money order will receive a check in the mail within 30 days.
Got the same Penn State "lack of funding" e-mail. First they mess with Paterno and hurt their endowment, causing the MFA program to suffer. Athletics over academics once again. Really Penn State, really? "WE ARE PENN STATE" - my *ss!
Fair warning for those applying to Univ. of Ark., Fayetteville: I was in a different program there, but I came to know enough about the MFA program by my proximity and through a couple of mutual acquaintances to make me wary. . . . Reportedly, the program had a recent history of requiring in-person interviews w/ female applicants (surely a dubious practice) as well as at least one prof. acting, er, very inappropriately w/ students. Yeah, I know—rumor is often just that, but then again. . . . And, of course, there’s the ridiculously heavy teaching load; that the program in actuality takes most folks 4 not 3 years (why not get a Phd. *and* write a dissertation in that time?!); that one of the Eng. dept.’s most touted (but also most overrated) profs. just left; and that Mohja Kahf, another highly published (and self-centered) prof., largely distances herself from the MFA program in its entirety and works in the comp. lit. program instead—not to mention the utterly depressing, literally crumbling state of Kimpel Hall, whose elevators are likely to maim or slaughter some starving, underpaid grad. student sometime in the foreseeable future. Finally, if teaching is a goal, their job placement reputation is ridiculously inflated, as many graduates, yes, get “teaching jobs” but in doing so linger and rot away in that black hole state in *high school* or, at best, community college teaching positions. . . . So, granted, these comments might really irritate a few folks affiliated w/ the program and may even get removed by a mod., as has happened before—but if any of this gives even one candidate the slightest pause at attending UARK, then I feel I’ve been of some use to their well-being.

I plan on being admitted to every school in the above list. I will then make my decision of which school to attend based on a precise system of compatibility and affordability: with a map of the USA on a dart board, I will proceed to throw a dart. Whichever school is closest to said dart will be the school that takes me on as a student. Every other school will be burnt to the ground.

I applied to UVA and Hollins for fiction. A scant application pool, I realize, but I'm finishing up an MA in English at JMU and time and fincances were too limited to do a application blow out. Anyone else applying to Hollins? I haven't heard from either, and Murphy's law says I won't until at least another two months of agony!

I'm freaking out because I just got an email from UT Austin Grad School (which handles both Michener and the English Dept.) telling me that my application was incomplete and to check my status online. When I did, it showed that my transcripts wee missing. I definitely uploaded them when I first applied, and my status was marked complete (including transcripts) as soon as my recommendations came in. Does anybody know if this stupid glitch might have gotten my apps thrown out? I emailed the grad school after re-uploading the transcripts to explain, but I'm a little worried.
The information about Arkansas MFA is absolutely correct. I took my BA there, and the MFA Program has been in a nose-dive for several years, ever since James Whitehead, Bill Harrison, and Miller Williams retired. Avoid at all costs.

*Note: TSU in San Marcos required you to email your Writing Portfolio, but mail in everything else (for Graduate Teaching Assistantships) and their email address bounced back to me about 100 times. I ended up trying to send it from at least 4 different email addresses of mine at various wifi spots (my home, my work, a friend's house) to no avail. I even used SendSpace.com (which worked, but they wouldn't accept it) and mailed a hard copy (which they also wouldn't accept.) On the phone, they said I was the only one having this problem, which made me feel totally insane. I have now accepted that the universe just doesn't want me to move to Texas.
And, I even had a friend try to email them my application and it bounced back as well. Double-checked their email address spelling, emailed them something without an attachment and it still bounced back. I'll never understand what happened...They even emailed me and my reply to them immediately bounced back.
@ Matt, I was also accepted to American in fiction. One of my references told me she hopes I go there because she thinks Richard McCann is awesome. It is also in a beautiful part of the city.

Fingers still crossed. I'm guessing none of the above schools will send notifications until late February or early March. I think Syracuse is the most selective school I applied to. Didn't see anyone else who applied at Wichita or New Mexico State though.

I actually read McCann's Mother of Sorrows since being accepted (to get a sense of him), and found it very well-written. Though I'm not writing on the same topics as him, I found some similarities in his style and mine, which encourages me to work with him.
It is a wonderful area, but is also very expensive. My concerns aren't so much with the program but with the funding and cost of living in D.C.
Have you heard about funding? They seemed to think they'd notify around the middle of February.

News from the FB group: Acceptances at UMass Amherst today and yesterday for both poetry and fiction, by phone. A Wyoming poetry acceptance, who also reported that CNF and fiction have not gone out yet; and some Minnesota/WUSTL waitlist action. Anyone else on here hear anything from Minnesota?
I think one fiction acceptance (yesterday) and three poetry acceptances for UMass. According to one of the poetry acceptances, they are taking 14 poetry students this year, so I don't think they're done notifying. Hope that helps!

Yes, for those of us who are facebookless, we would really appreciate any updates from the facebook group. And what about waiting lists? Some schools have notified those accepted but have they notified those on waiting lists? Appreciate any news.
To those who applied to Wyoming, it seems my online application status changed from "In Review" to "pending dept approval." Has this happened for anyone else? I think it simply means that the app was green-lighted by the Admissions Dept.

This probably goes out to a small audience, but UC Riverside called me today with an acceptance in fiction. I'd love to hear from others with similar news.
"We are pleased to report that the program has recommended your admission for FALL 2012. After the Dean of the Graduate College has completed her review of your application, you will receive a letter with an official decision."
Pretty much, bunny. It means you got a nomination, which is the department saying to the graduate college that they want to admit you. As long as the graduate college finds your transcripts, standardized test scores, or whatever means they have of screening applicants, to be acceptable, you're in.

How were you notified about the "final review" for Minnesota? I've been checking my status via apply yourself, but nothing has changed. I've also heard elsewhere that people have received rejections through the online status...
My status was also marked as "final review" when I checked it this morning. Unfortunately, my rejection notice was waiting in my inbox when I got home from work. I hope that this isn't necessarily the case for either of you, although the news probably isn't very good :/
Sorry to hear that Eric. My status never changed from "awaiting program decision." It's just such a painfully slow death...would rather someone pull the trigger at this point.
I think there have been at least three UMass fiction acceptances reported - possibly more. Alabama has notified people in all three genres, but it's unclear whether they are finished or not - word is they are taking 12 in poetry, 12 in prose, and Michael Martone is the one making the calls.
Thanks, Derek. This is the first official correspondence I've received, and it's especially difficult since I did my undergraduate work at Minnesota (however, I've heard from people in other departments that UMN is hesitant to take its own undergrads for whatever reasons; I live less than a mile from both the Minneapolis and St. Paul campuses). But like in any other situation, it's important to keep the chin up, to continue looking forward. I really do hope that everything works out in the best possible (albeit various) ways for everyone who applied for their MFA. The more writers we have, the stronger our culture becomes. I hope this isn't sentimental, but I really want everyone on here to experience some type of literary success.
I'm about to send transcripts to one of my schools for the THIRD time since both the previous attempts have failed to arrive.
Would anyone care to speculate on whether or not it's a good sign that the school is chasing up my transcripts 2+ months after deadline? Can't help thinking that if they were going to reject me anyway they wouldn't bother, but am wary of raising false hope...

I also received an email from Minnesota saying that their decision was ready and to check. Rejected, as I was kind of expecting. They had a nice letter though all "unfortunately you are not accepted..we had many excellent applicants this year...don't let this discourage you from personal and professional goals", which I appreciated since it sounds like some other schools have been brusque in their denial.

I received an acceptance to SUNY Stony Brook today! I am a touch concerned because it seems no one else has even applied there and I wonder if that is true. Anyone else apply to Stony Brook?
bcudz congratulations! Just because there's no one on here who applied to Stony Brook (which..I can't remember off the top of my head if anyone listed it or not) doesn't mean you're the only one! There are plenty of people who apply to mfas and they're not all stalking this blog/the facebook group like some of us are : )
Based on past years, Vanderbilt poetry calls might come out in the first half this week (with Cornell perhaps at the end of the week). So no Cornell announcement yet? This probably means that the two people who got in for fiction don't belong to the facebook group and don't know about the existence of this group. They are bound to make themselves known eventually, though. Well... I only applied to Cornell, so I guess not hearing anything so far means this is it for me this year. Best of luck to everyone! And please, post here when some news from Cornell do appear, I'm out of the race, but still curious to see who got in.
Pedro, the Cornell program states on its website that it accepts four of its fiction applicants each year. It's possible that they haven't made their calls yet. After all, if their applicant numbers continued to increase year after year (as most fiction numbers have tended to do in the recent past), they have been dealing with over 500 applications of 6,000 to 12,000 words (that's three to six MILLION words). I feel your anxiety, but I thought I'd try to put the committee's task in perspective, since that's what I've been trying desperately to do. Good luck, and don't give up hope until you hear from them!

It's just that for the past three years Cornell made its fiction acceptances on the second Friday of February, so... but you're right, if they are dealing with more and more applications each year, then it is probable that maybe this year they decided to take a little longer. So, yeah, perhaps this Friday we'll hear from them. And they say 4 on the website but last year they only accepted 3, apperantely... good luck to you too man!
@bcudz - Congratulations on your acceptance! We can't wait to have you join us. And ditto what @Betty said: yes, there are many other people who have applied. Our Southampton Arts community is quickly growing and thriving with artists studying multiple forms of writing. We're so glad you're going to be one of them!
Bcudz: I've taken courses at Stony Brook. The program is amazing and it wouldn't surprise me if it entered into the top 20 programs on one of those silly rankings people place so much emphasis on within the next several years. First, the program offers a community of some of the biggest names in the New York writing community. Entrance into the program more importantly means entrance into this community. Second, the program, historically in South Hampton, has started offering courses in NYC. No other program in the country offers two such beautiful, dynamic locations, which compliment eachother so well. Third, it is cheap...relative to many other NYC programs, especially after you become a NY citizen. It doesn't have funding like a lot of places across the country, but then again those places aren't NYC. Fourth, they offer a wide range of courses, which will continue to increase as the theater program takes off.
The bottom line is this is a program flying under the radar that probably has higher admission rates currently than many programs of lesser stature. Expect admission to become more difficult in the coming years. The program is best suited in my opinion for 1) writers serious about getting their work in top publications 2) savvy NYC professionals who want to write for whatever reason. I expect the former group to grow over the next several years. See for yourself...go to one of the reading series this semester. There is a good chance the persons sitting on either side of you in the audience are as venerated as the person reading.

For those of you not on the facebook group: michigan is apparently not contacting people today. It will be anywhere from tomorrow to monday. Poetry notifications may or may not be happening a day before fiction. And the means of notification may or may not be e-mail. So, in other words, not a lot of solid intel.
Has UC Riverside finished in notifying applicants? I heard through the grapevine (from recent UCR MFAers) that they have made their decisions. Last Friday, I know of two people who have been called (congrats, btw!). I asked the graduate coordinator and he said they haven't finished in decisions and that acceptances would be emailed. So, I'm a little confused.
Thanks for your help! I have already assumed I didn't make it in, but it'll be nice to know if they have finished notifying.
So far nothing. I've heard a few folks are already getting "decline" notices from Michener and I think New School should be notifying applicants any time now. Grr. Anyone heard from any of the above? How's the facebook group going?

Well, I just got my first reply -- an e-mail from Penn State. Looks like they're not taking anyone into the program based on lack of funding:
The English Department regretfully announces that beginning with the Fall 2012 admission cycle, it is no longer accepting applications for its MFA program. We are unable to provide funding for newly admitted students; therefore, the MFA faculty has decided not to recruit any new students. We are extremely sorry about the inconvenience and disappointment this decision may have caused you.
The Graduate School will refund the application fee for those individuals who submitted and paid for their English/MFA applications for the Fall 2012 semester and later. Individual applicants will not be notified directly that they have been refunded. Applicants who paid by credit card will see the refund on their next month’s statement. Those applicants who paid by check or money order will receive a check in the mail within 30 days.

Got the same Penn State "lack of funding" e-mail. First they mess with Paterno and hurt their endowment, causing the MFA program to suffer. Athletics over academics once again. Really Penn State, really? "WE ARE PENN STATE" - my *ss!
Fair warning for those applying to Univ. of Ark., Fayetteville: I was in a different program there, but I came to know enough about the MFA program by my proximity and through a couple of mutual acquaintances to make me wary. . . . Reportedly, the program had a recent history of requiring in-person interviews w/ female applicants (surely a dubious practice) as well as at least one prof. acting, er, very inappropriately w/ students. Yeah, I know—rumor is often just that, but then again. . . . And, of course, there’s the ridiculously heavy teaching load; that the program in actuality takes most folks 4 not 3 years (why not get a Phd. *and* write a dissertation in that time?!); that one of the Eng. dept.’s most touted (but also most overrated) profs. just left; and that Mohja Kahf, another highly published (and self-centered) prof., largely distances herself from the MFA program in its entirety and works in the comp. lit. program instead—not to mention the utterly depressing, literally crumbling state of Kimpel Hall, whose elevators are likely to maim or slaughter some starving, underpaid grad. student sometime in the foreseeable future. Finally, if teaching is a goal, their job placement reputation is ridiculously inflated, as many graduates, yes, get “teaching jobs” but in doing so linger and rot away in that black hole state in *high school* or, at best, community college teaching positions. . . . So, granted, these comments might really irritate a few folks affiliated w/ the program and may even get removed by a mod., as has happened before—but if any of this gives even one candidate the slightest pause at attending UARK, then I feel I’ve been of some use to their well-being.

I'm freaking out because I just got an email from UT Austin Grad School (which handles both Michener and the English Dept.) telling me that my application was incomplete and to check my status online. When I did, it showed that my transcripts wee missing. I definitely uploaded them when I first applied, and my status was marked complete (including transcripts) as soon as my recommendations came in. Does anybody know if this stupid glitch might have gotten my apps thrown out? I emailed the grad school after re-uploading the transcripts to explain, but I'm a little worried.
The information about Arkansas MFA is absolutely correct. I took my BA there, and the MFA Program has been in a nose-dive for several years, ever since James Whitehead, Bill Harrison, and Miller Williams retired. Avoid at all costs.

*Note: TSU in San Marcos required you to email your Writing Portfolio, but mail in everything else (for Graduate Teaching Assistantships) and their email address bounced back to me about 100 times. I ended up trying to send it from at least 4 different email addresses of mine at various wifi spots (my home, my work, a friend's house) to no avail. I even used SendSpace.com (which worked, but they wouldn't accept it) and mailed a hard copy (which they also wouldn't accept.) On the phone, they said I was the only one having this problem, which made me feel totally insane. I have now accepted that the universe just doesn't want me to move to Texas.
And, I even had a friend try to email them my application and it bounced back as well. Double-checked their email address spelling, emailed them something without an attachment and it still bounced back. I'll never understand what happened...They even emailed me and my reply to them immediately bounced back.

I actually read McCann's Mother of Sorrows since being accepted (to get a sense of him), and found it very well-written. Though I'm not writing on the same topics as him, I found some similarities in his style and mine, which encourages me to work with him.
It is a wonderful area, but is also very expensive. My concerns aren't so much with the program but with the funding and cost of living in D.C.
Have you heard about funding? They seemed to think they'd notify around the middle of February.

I think one fiction acceptance (yesterday) and three poetry acceptances for UMass. According to one of the poetry acceptances, they are taking 14 poetry students this year, so I don't think they're done notifying. Hope that helps!

"We are pleased to report that the program has recommended your admission for FALL 2012. After the Dean of the Graduate College has completed her review of your application, you will receive a letter with an official decision."
what does this mean?? is this an acceptance???
Pretty much, bunny. It means you got a nomination, which is the department saying to the graduate college that they want to admit you. As long as the graduate college finds your transcripts, standardized test scores, or whatever means they have of screening applicants, to be acceptable, you're in.

My status was also marked as "final review" when I checked it this morning. Unfortunately, my rejection notice was waiting in my inbox when I got home from work. I hope that this isn't necessarily the case for either of you, although the news probably isn't very good :/
Sorry to hear that Eric. My status never changed from "awaiting program decision." It's just such a painfully slow death...would rather someone pull the trigger at this point.

I think there have been at least three UMass fiction acceptances reported - possibly more. Alabama has notified people in all three genres, but it's unclear whether they are finished or not - word is they are taking 12 in poetry, 12 in prose, and Michael Martone is the one making the calls.
Thanks, Derek. This is the first official correspondence I've received, and it's especially difficult since I did my undergraduate work at Minnesota (however, I've heard from people in other departments that UMN is hesitant to take its own undergrads for whatever reasons; I live less than a mile from both the Minneapolis and St. Paul campuses). But like in any other situation, it's important to keep the chin up, to continue looking forward. I really do hope that everything works out in the best possible (albeit various) ways for everyone who applied for their MFA. The more writers we have, the stronger our culture becomes. I hope this isn't sentimental, but I really want everyone on here to experience some type of literary success.

I'm about to send transcripts to one of my schools for the THIRD time since both the previous attempts have failed to arrive.
Would anyone care to speculate on whether or not it's a good sign that the school is chasing up my transcripts 2+ months after deadline? Can't help thinking that if they were going to reject me anyway they wouldn't bother, but am wary of raising false hope...

It seems that a few people have heard from Minnesota, but only regarding fiction and poetry. Has anyone received an acceptance/rejection for CNF?
CNF acceptances to Minnesota have been reported on the FB group - I just can't remember how many. People have been slowly getting rejected through the online portal & email, but it seems like they are trickling. Mine still says "Awaiting Program Decision."

Hey guys! Two years ago I spent all my time obsessively tracking everything on this blog as I went through the MFA application process. I ended up going with NYU, and I'm now in my final semester, chipping away at my thesis. Does anyone know anything about the City College (NY) MFA fiction program? I applied only to Hunter (memoir) this year. Doubt whether I stand even a chance but nothing ventured, nothing gained. Good luck to all! (Am Faceless so depending on this site for news and updates!)
I received an acceptance to SUNY Stony Brook today! I am a touch concerned because it seems no one else has even applied there and I wonder if that is true. Anyone else apply to Stony Brook?

bcudz congratulations! Just because there's no one on here who applied to Stony Brook (which..I can't remember off the top of my head if anyone listed it or not) doesn't mean you're the only one! There are plenty of people who apply to mfas and they're not all stalking this blog/the facebook group like some of us are : )
Based on past years, Vanderbilt poetry calls might come out in the first half this week (with Cornell perhaps at the end of the week). I'm surprised that nobody has posted fiction acceptances on the Facebook group (from Vanderbilt OR Cornell). Would someone mind posting another update of the FB Group doc?

So no Cornell announcement yet? This probably means that the two people who got in for fiction don't belong to the facebook group and don't know about the existence of this group. They are bound to make themselves known eventually, though. Well... I only applied to Cornell, so I guess not hearing anything so far means this is it for me this year. Best of luck to everyone! And please, post here when some news from Cornell do appear, I'm out of the race, but still curious to see who got in.
Pedro, the Cornell program states on its website that it accepts four of its fiction applicants each year. It's possible that they haven't made their calls yet. After all, if their applicant numbers continued to increase year after year (as most fiction numbers have tended to do in the recent past), they have been dealing with over 500 applications of 6,000 to 12,000 words (that's three to six MILLION words).
I feel your anxiety, but I thought I'd try to put the committee's task in perspective, since that's what I've been trying desperately to do. Good luck, and don't give up hope until you hear from them!

It's just that for the past three years Cornell made its fiction acceptances on the second Friday of February, so... but you're right, if they are dealing with more and more applications each year, then it is probable that maybe this year they decided to take a little longer. So, yeah, perhaps this Friday we'll hear from them. And they say 4 on the website but last year they only accepted 3, apperantely... good luck to you too man!

Bcudz: I've taken courses at Stony Brook. The program is amazing and it wouldn't surprise me if it entered into the top 20 programs on one of those silly rankings people place so much emphasis on within the next several years. First, the program offers a community of some of the biggest names in the New York writing community. Entrance into the program more importantly means entrance into this community. Second, the program, historically in South Hampton, has started offering courses in NYC. No other program in the country offers two such beautiful, dynamic locations, which compliment eachother so well. Third, it is cheap...relative to many other NYC programs, especially after you become a NY citizen. It doesn't have funding like a lot of places across the country, but then again those places aren't NYC. Fourth, they offer a wide range of courses, which will continue to increase as the theater program takes off.
The bottom line is this is a program flying under the radar that probably has higher admission rates currently than many programs of lesser stature. Expect admission to become more difficult in the coming years. The program is best suited in my opinion for 1) writers serious about getting their work in top publications 2) savvy NYC professionals who want to write for whatever reason. I expect the former group to grow over the next several years. See for yourself...go to one of the reading series this semester. There is a good chance the persons sitting on either side of you in the audience are as venerated as the person reading.

Has Michigan started notifying people yet today? It's my top choice, so I'm anxious to hear when the notifying has begun.

For those of you not on the facebook group: michigan is apparently not contacting people today. It will be anywhere from tomorrow to monday. Poetry notifications may or may not be happening a day before fiction. And the means of notification may or may not be e-mail. So, in other words, not a lot of solid intel.
Has UC Riverside finished in notifying applicants? I heard through the grapevine (from recent UCR MFAers) that they have made their decisions. Last Friday, I know of two people who have been called (congrats, btw!). I asked the graduate coordinator and he said they haven't finished in decisions and that acceptances would be emailed. So, I'm a little confused.
Thanks for your help! I have already assumed I didn't make it in, but it'll be nice to know if they have finished notifying.
