Heyo. To all of you, I know this post is not necessarily the place to ask this, but I'm reading only my own echo on others'... Everyone seems to be talking about getting their acceptance or rejection letters/phone calls around now, but I was under the impression we wouldn't start hearing back from most of the schools until mid to late March. Am I missing something? Someone mind telling me what they know, if anything? Thanks!

@ Gil:

Check this out - http://sethabramson.blogspot.com/2011/01/2011-cw-mamfaphd-application-responses.html

Seth has compiled data on acceptance timing and modes in which these acceptances were communicated for the past five years or so. Looking at these should give you a good sense of what to expect...

Michigan, Brown, Syracuse, all in fiction.

Let's see how it goes.

Azlan said...

And I'll tell you what, I blew through the 2nd half of November in a haze of booze and weed and completed three applications. I think that maybe my essays and other materials might have been too playful.

Also, I think one of my recommenders might have fallen into serious illness and didn't send off the materials I needed. One of the schools I applied to is where he went to doc. school.

Any thoughts on this? Am I all around screwed? I have a burning cinder of confidence in me, the same kind people get when they buy a scratch off lottery ticket and consider all the possibilities.

Is this misplaced optimism?

Azlan said...

The other side of it is, I think my two other recommendations might blow it out of the water, one is my study abroad instructor, the other the director of the writing center I worked at in undergrad, and I think that both of these will paint a positive picture of me.

So, does anyone have a score for me?

I've found this community, which I've only experienced as a lurker (so far), has been really helpful in getting me through the seemingly endless waiting period.

I got into rutgers-camden but am waiting to hear from San Fran State and University of Arizona. Has anyone heard from either one?

Thanks!

Quick question - the 2011 App Response Data Bank says there was a Notre Dame fiction acceptance given by phone on March 7th - does anyone know if this is correct? I know there was an accpetance that went out for CNF on the 7th (someone posted that on this blog), but I haven't heard anything about fiction yet. Anyone else?

Preliminary list for Seth in poetry. Things could shift around (especially a precious waitlist), but not too much. I'm approaching the end of the line and I only have 3 places to hear from. Lucky to have any good news at all. The following list is why I encourage applicants to use a scattergun approach.

Rejected (or presumed):

Iowa
Michigan
Michener
Alabama
Hopkins
Illinois
Wisconsin
Cornell
Brown
Vandy

Waiting to Hear:

Virginia
Arizona
Houston

Waitlist:
Florida (high on waitlist)

Accepted:
Irvine

Does anybody know if acceptances have gone out for Houston, Virginia, Washington, or Indiana U.? I haven't heard anything from these schools. So far I'm wait-listed at Johns Hopkins and admitted to OSU and Oregon.

ANYONE HEARD ANYTHING FROM COLUMBIA IN POETRY? I REALLY DON'T WANT TO GO TO THE NEW SCHOOL :(

Leitmotifish said...

Hey all--so my last school notified today, and I have not heard anything from them, so it seems like this is the end of this season for me! It is dangerous to assume rejection--I did and was later found to be VERY wrong, but I am happy with the choices I got so I am just going to assume rejection and stop following online...FINALLY! If I hear anything more, I'll wait to hear it from the horse's mouth, because all of this online stress of following has literally been making me sick....

I applied to 9 schools in fiction:
Iowa: Accepted
Michigan: Accepted
Syracuse: Accepted
Houston: Accepted
Florida (Gainesville): Accepted
Johns Hopkins: Waitlisted
UC Irvine--haven't heard anything, assuming rejection--I liked this school so so much but now it is obviously no biggie.
Arizona State University--Haven't heard anything, assuming rejection
UVA: haven't heard anything, assuming rejection as of today....(if I am right they notified today, right?)

I am deciding between Michigan and Iowa. I will likely decide pretty close to the deadline, sorry! I am super stressed like that with decisions, but will do my best to decide as soon as I can to help out waitlisters. I let all my other schools know I will not be attending, so I hope I at least helped waitlisters at those schools by narrowing it to two choices so fast....

All best! Good Luck!
bye bye bye and for future generations (I know I was following the threads of last years RELIGIOUSLY)---Do NOT 100 percent assume rejection until you are ACTUALLY rejected. Also if you are strong enough, do not follow online;)....my two cents:)
Also visit schools whenever possible if you get in to more than one--it helps!

Hi Seth,

I applied to UCSD and am wondering if they are truly a fully funded program. A couple of your blogs have listen them as a fully funded program, and I am wondering what your bases are for this before I accept admission? I'm already in debt from undergrad, and dont' think I can afford anymore debt. Do you think it would be worth it to accept their offer or wait another year or two and apply somewhere that will take care of my whole bill?

Thank you for your time and help,
Nate

Seth Abramson said...

Nate,
If you call the program, they should be able to give you a statement of what percentage of their incoming students receive TAships; you can make clear that your ability to attend the program is dependent upon a TAship, and that's the reason for you asking. In the past, the UCSD website has indicated that the program is fully funded, but the language has since changed--I don't know if it's a site redesign or an actual change in policy. I hope you will write back and let me (and everyone) know what they say. I certainly feel like you shouldn't attend UCSD unfunded, and if they guarantee you a TAship (i.e., if they say one will come available in May) and then it doesn't, you would be well within your rights to revoke your acceptance of their offer of admission.
