I feel your nervousness C. I'm trying to be productive but the waiting is killing me. I read, I tutor, and I constantly check my email.

@bcudz - I'm an alum of the Southampton MFA program (but got my degree back when it was owned by Long Island University - now it is owned by Stony Brook - long story). I also work for the program as the alumni coordinator and for the Summer Conference as a theatre coordinator.

And ditto everything @ughh said. :)

Just got a wonderful email from Rutgers-Newark accepting me into their MFA program for poetry! Still waiting to hear back from CUNY-Hunter and Iowa (both for poetry as well).

I received acceptance from Hunter non-fiction today via phone.

Can't help wondering why Seth Abramson stopped posting his list of MFA application returns. I bet a lot of people first encountered his work by nervously checking his blog each year!

Oregon State MFA? Think Twice.

Do not attend the Oregon State MFA program in creative writing. The place isn’t for writers. The department chair has a background in Women’s Studies—a program known for its body image collages, even in graduate classes(!)--and not a single literary publication.

The department has a history of pushing out non-conformists that dates back to the 1950s, when Bernard Malamud was shown the door because of his politics and his literary achievement that stirred jealousy and resentment. Now they "honor" him with a shabby reading room.

In September the department issued a public announcement that Poets & Writers rated them 22nd best MFA program in the country. They were, in fact, ranked 22nd "most popular," among several other categories. Poets & Writers offered no "best of" this year. An instructor who exposed the false press release was threatened with termination if he said anything more. The department has issued no correction. Even now, most of the students and faculty seem to believe the misleading information.

22nd most popular would have been good news, but a false press release--with no correction and apology later, along with the threat to the instructor--constitutes a cover-up.

Perhaps the grimmest feature of the department is that it's not literary but social and political. The overarching School of Writing, Literature and Film offers many courses in cultural studies, but few English classes.

Similarly, in the MFA program, some of the faculty produce and encourage “social justice” writing, and frown on anything else. It's no department's business to encourage anything but excellence in craft.

The whole university requires that you get on board with OSU politics. Students and faculty receive frequent emails from the president's office instructing them on what speech is inappropriate. There's a stiff price to pay for students and faculty who refuse to speak as told.

Oregon State University is a scary place with extremists running the show--who are every bit as bad as far-right extremists. A few years ago they dumped student newspaper bins in a field, effectively shutting down the newspaper, Putin-style, and called it a campus "beatification project." It was a conservative paper and possibly extreme or silly--I never read it--but it was no more crazy than the university-sanctioned paper, which also deserves to print what it wishes.

Bizarre politics are evident on campus every day. Consider the following student activity where students chant slogans and then are offered a sweet afterwards. OSU frequently mails students invitations to political gatherings like this:

"NEW! Day of Non-Judgment: The “Day of Non-Judgment,” is a 24-hour challenge to not judge, in thought or action, and will be celebrated on Nov. 14, at 11:14 a.m., in the Memorial Union Quad. Participants will read a pledge of equity and inclusion out loud, and students will repeat it. Because the event is happening during International Education Week, the pledge will also be read by students in their native Chinese, Arabic and Spanish. Afterward cocoa will be available for participants."

Chanting before having a sweet has been a common form of mild brainwashing often used by cults.
