Acceptances?

So I've been hearing that some acceptances have gone out. Anybody heard anything?

rejected (for fiction) from the MA program at NYU as well as UMASS yesterday. Both via (typo-free) snail mail.

That second rejection letter is such a slap in the face. But we've got another month until we can know anything for sure, so try not to worry as you wait it out, and then go from there.

Has anyone heard anything from Mississippi?

Debbie and Adam said...

Has anyone heard from University of Arizona yet? I saw on Seth's blog that fiction emails went out on Monday. I applied for both fiction and non-fiction, and I haven't heard from either program.

I'm turning into a basketcase...

Hey UNH ppl... i called, didn't get funding! I'm really sad, I was so optomistic. Now I'm so sad. :( Oh well... plan B... new job.

Kristina said...

Speak Coffee, Robert, and Taggie 7: I was admitted to UNH, too, for fiction. Are you planning to visit the program at any point? I checked the school's WebCat site to find out I got in.

I've heard back from all my schools now. Final tally:

Accepted: UNH, George Mason, Pitt
Rejected: Michigan, Wisconsin, U Mass, NYU, and Rutgers

Tanya said...

KHR - congrats! (I was accepted to Pitt too--no funding)

I didn't receive funding from UNH either, so I really don't see how I'm going to be able to go (I'm not willing to take out more school loans at this point). I'm ever the optomistic so I'm still holding onto to SOME shred of hope, but....

If something turns around for me (or I decide to take on more debt) then yes I will be visiting the campus.

Good luck to you!
:)T

Taggie7: We must have a similar writing style! Congrats on your acceptances, and I hope you find a way to attend. George Mason sent me information noting that students can apply for jobs with the university at large, where they would receive a full salary and benefits, and a certain number of credits for free each semester. I'm sure that's true at any school. If you can work your hours around your classes, that might be an option. Check it out before you give up!

When did you hear from Pitt and UNH? I haven't heard from either yet, though I e-mailed Pitt about funding two weeks ago... They said they would get back to me but haven't yet.

Tanya said...

Yeah, we're either similar or pretty different! :)

I heard from Pitt at the end of February and emailed Troy Boone about funding. He told me flat out that there was nothing (emailed me back the same day). I found out about UNH last week (on the website) and received the official letter this week (it was dated March 7). Good luck to you, hopefully you'll hear better news than me!

Good point about looking for university jobs, I may try that out--not sure what UNH offers their employees, but maybe something. I won't give up hope yet--but i'm pretty sad right now. Hopefully something good is right around the corner!

Unknown said...

KHR congrats! I'd like to visit UNH but reasonably that means a trip in the next month which is feasible, but not easy (13 hours by car).

Taggie7 - I'm terrified to ask about funding now! Who did you end up calling and talking to?

Tanya said...

Speak Coffee - I called Janine. I say just call and get it over with! :) Maybe you'll be luckier than me!

Good luck and let me know either way!

Kristina said...

No aid from UNH for me either. Hopefully from Pitt or GMU? We'll see, I guess.

just found out i was accepted to UNH for poetry. no funding, but i am on the short list, so she said something will probably pop-up. here's hoping!

KHR, several Pitt acceptees are planning on visiting Pitt in a few weeks. Interested?

Kristina said...

Pensive495: When are you all going? I'd love to go see the program.

Pensive495 said...

KHR:
We started a blog for all of us Pitt acceptees; I posted it in my last comment. We've been swapping information about funding, the program, and a campus visit. There are some current students who have been posting on there as well. Here is the link again.

There is a class schedule posted on there; right now we're thinking a Monday would be a good compromise to sit in on a workshop. They also meet at a bar afterwards; love it if you could give us your input!

Kristina said...

Taggie7: I called UNH yesterday and they said I had no funding and was not on a wait list; I e-mailed before I called and just got an e-mail back saying I was a certain number on their wait list for aid. Try e-mailing; they may have time to more thoroughly look over their lists when they're not on the phone. Just wanted to share!

Tanya said...

KHR - Oooh, thanks, I may try that. Although I did email her first too and didn't get a response (which is why I called).

For those waiting on Colorado State University - I emailed Marnie Leonard to see when CSU may be making some decisions. Here's her response:

"Competition was especially keen and our faculty are making some very hard decisions. Sometime in the next two weeks, faculty will be giving me the names of applicants they recommend for admission to our various graduate programs. At that point, I’ll have a considerable amount of paperwork to generate and official notification will go out by mail."

Unknown said...

taggie7,

thanks for asking about csu. i applied there also. at least another couple of weeks, huh? oh well. hope we both have luck there.

i figured it best to respond here instead of on seth's site, since there seems to be eight lanes of rush hour traffic there every day. hard to navigate.

i just e-mailed unh about funding since i was at work yesterday and didn't have time to call/e-mail. so no word yet. not holding my breath, exactly.

khr- if i receive funding, then i think a visit to durham would be a good investment, albeit a pricey one since i live in mississippi. we'll see. if i've got no chance at funding i'm not really sure the point, but i could change my mind about that, also.

congrats and good luck.

Tanya said...

Robert,

I have my fingers crossed for CSU, but we'll see. Two weeks feels like such a long time to wait, but we have no choice. I heard on Speakeasy that there's going to be a UNH Day for accepted students at the end of the month. We're supposed to receive more information about this, I guess. I keep thinking about visiting although funding is out for me (pricy for me too as I'm in Texas). I might go up regardless, maybe something will change my mind about taking on debt. I don't know.

Anyway, good luck to you. I hope that you hear good things!

Kristina said...

Robert and Taggie7, I know I'll definitely be able to visit UNH no problem, since I'm not as far away as you both are. If you want me to ask any questions for you when I go, or to take pictures or anything like that, let me know. :)

Unknown said...

khr, Robert and Taggie7 (UNH ppl):
I emailed my listed advisor, she didn't mention the visit day but I just sent her a very general "is this the right email address?" sort of letter. She responded immediately with financial aid info even before I asked:
"So, the best I can tell you in terms of aid at this point is that there may be funding opening up in the next semester(s) for those of you who may enroll in the program without aid. Since we only admit 5-7 in each genre (and we have no way of knowing how many or who will choose UNH from the top few we offered aid to in each genre), that funding could come available, but there's no guarantee (it is spread out over the 3 genres)."

I don't know what I'm going to do with that information but I'd still like to visit.

Tanya said...

Speak Coffee... I received the same message from the adviser listed on my letter too (almost word for word). I would like to visit also, but I'm still thinking about it. I'll be doing a lot of thinking in the next several weeks. Did you ask Janine about funding? She may have more information for you.

Accepted at Lesley yesterday and Vermont today, for fiction. Woo hoo!

Still haven't heard yet from Warren Wilson, Antioch, University of Florida (assumed rejection), University of Miami, and Florida Internat'l University.

I don't think I'll hear from WW or FIU until mid-April--yikes!

speak coffee, taggie7, khr and co.,

ann williams e-mail me back last night. alas, funding has eluded me also. oh well. (who, exactly, did they fund for fiction?) i'm going to wait it out for now. i've still got an option with full ride and ta'ship, and five other schools to hear from (six, if you include florida, who hasn't 'officially' rejected me yet).

so, good luck everyone.

Tanya said...

Robert... sorry to hear that, but I'm glad that you still have some options. I do too, hopefully... I'll just continue waiting on CSU. UNH only accepted 5-7 ppl for fiction, so someone out there has the funding--maybe they lucked out and didn't find the message boards, which I've found are both good and horrible. :)T

Today I found out by phone that I've been accepted into Columbia College Chicago's MFA fiction program.

:)

Congrats, Susan!

rejected from UMass Amherst, but accepted into Nebraska's MA program for fiction!

still waiting on Colorado State and Oregon...

Tanya said...

Someone received a letter from Colorado State (Seth's blog)... dated on the 13th of this month, so... I guess I can start checking my mailbox! Good luck to everyone waiting on CSU!

Sorry to clog this board with UNH talk, but I have one last post (for now). I received a message from a CNF person who is starting up a google group for potential or definite attendees. I just wanted to share the link!

wind chaser--
Try to take classes with Jonis Agee if you can. She's amazing.

Unknown said...

so... anyone make any final decisions yet?

Sara said...

Hey everyone. Congratulations to those who have heard good news. I've been accepted at Columbia and NYU. I'm having trouble deciding between them.

At Columbia, you take around 4 classes a semester, whereas at NYU you'd take 2. This is a pretty significant difference--what is the "standard" full time workload for an MFA program?

Also, NYU has more opportunities for teaching (more TA positions, fellowships, etc.), but I think Columbia might have a better reputation on the whole.

I'm definitely going to one of these schools, I just need to pick which one. Can anyone help? Does Columbia have a clear advantage in terms of reputation? Have you heard any red flags about either program--besides cost, that is? (Fortunately, the cost of the programs is not really an issue.)

Thanks so much!

Accepted at Antioch in fiction by phone just now. They want a decision by April 7. Ack!

Hey, everyone. There is a good article in the current issue of Bust magazine (www.bust.com) about Columbus, Ohio. Thought it would be helpful for anyone considering OSU, sounds like a cool place.

Babelle said...

Cool, thanks, Colin--are you going to OSU? I'm pretty sure I am (fiction).

Unknown said...

samara,
no i'm just a fan of bust and thought i remembered some people posting about OSU. i think columbus sounds like a great place. OSU is also, of course, awesome. congrats.

got a rejection from columbia college in chicago today.

Grace said...

Hey I got accepted at The New School and George Mason, any thoughts on which program would be better?

I have two other schools to wait on.

Allary said...

Sameera, congratulations! I am going to the new school and am really excited about it. What's your concentration? Also, are you thinking of on campus housing? I've heard some good and bad things about it

Grace said...

allary- concentration in non-fiction for both. I'm on the fence about New School because of the cost. I got a scholarship but it won't cover very much. I still haven't heard back from SAIC or Columbia.

I'm in crunch decision time and I'm still struggling. As of today, I was offered a TA-ship at UNC Wilmington. Previously, I wasn't too enticed to go there and know very little about the school. Now that they offered me full funding plus (the only school to do so), they seem more attractive. I'm between them, Columbia (who gave me a small fellowship) and Sarah Lawrence. If money didn't matter, I think I'd sign myself up at Columbia. Advice?

Unknown said...

Emily,

It's a tough choice because Columbia is SUCH a big name. Personally, I'm a fan of the smaller, respected, fully-funded programs. I think they're great and a lot of them will rival the big names soon enough (or already are). I've heard good things about UNCW and Wilmington itself. It also has pretty good rankings. Tough choice. Good luck.

Hello all,
Guess I'll join the game. Since I'm looking for my schools in your posts, it's only fair.

After last year's failed attempt at 7 programs, I sent 11 applications in poetry.

admitted:
--George Mason, by mail in late February, no word on $ yet.
--South Carolina, by email first week of March with a follow up letter. Great $ offer sets my mind at ease.

rejections:
--Iowa WW, by mail, no surprise.
--UT Austin Michener, by mail to my parents' house in a different state. So if you're waiting to hear from them, call your mom?
--Colorado State, by mail, early march.
--Arkansas via email, this morning.

So, six down, five to go. Waiting on:

-Vanderbilt
-UNCW
-UNCG
-U. of Washington
-Colorado, Boulder

Congrats to you all for your efforts. Take heart if it's a bust this time around. Above all, let's try to make it till dax day with our fingernails intact!
