I just noticed I used the word "general" twice in my last comment. Please forgive me, it's quite late where I am.
Last few things:
Writers that inspire me:
I'd say Haruki Murakami, Yoko Ogawa and Gabriel Garcia Marquez, what with the whole magical-realism thing. I really like Yoko Ogawa's creepy, dreamy style and intimate details. With regards to actual inspiration or influence, though, I draw most of it from graphic novels (Neil Gaiman, Alan Moore) and sometimes movies (Park Chan-wook, Wong Kar-wai).
I found Michigan's essays to be a bit of a challenge too. I don't know that I totally satisfied their need. But I think i'm relatively happy with what I ended up sending out.
I hate to ask this question early in the game, but just wondering what other people are thinking they'll do if they don't get in. would you apply again next year?
IF i don't get it (no!), applying next year will depend on whether i think my writing sample is substantially stronger. i HOPE that another year of writing will mean even better work, but i would have to be sure before i spend another grand trying to get into school.
on the other hand, my GRE score is only good for one more year. i can't imagine having to take it again!
I guess that's sort of how I feel. If I get waitlisted but not in, I might be more inclined to apply again. Otherwise, I'm not sure I'll be able to improve my work with the job I have now. I'm rarely home from work before 8:30 and finding time to write a lot is tough. But it's possible I'll choose to make a lifestyle change regardless of admission.
I feel like such a defeatist by already planning for 'next time' but I guess I'm just trying to protect my sanity by assuming the worst.
If I don't get in--I'm going to hike the Applachian trail or move to Budapest or something equally impossible, because this is what this is--impossible. So why the hell not?
But hopefully I'll get in, because I hate mosquitoes and don't speak Hungarian.
I'm definitely planning on re-applying if I don't get in this time. I'll have the whole summer to work on my SOP and sample [I'll also get to work on it because it's part of the thesis] and I'll retake the GRE. I'll also definitely look at more schools; i kind of haphazardly picked 8 and went with them based on funding and ranking, but maybe I should look at more second and third-tier schools? I'm not sure. We'll see, I guess!
I used Interfolio for all my LORs and from Cornell I received an email confirmation when each one had been successfully captured by their system. Email came from "Embark Online Documents" and subject was "_____'s Form Submitted." Text of message says "_______ has successfully submitted your online document to Cornell University Graduate School 2011."

«Oldest ‹Older 601 – 615 of 615I keep dreaming that I get into 3 schools. I never remember two, but Michigan is always one.
Positive dreams are better than rejection dreams!
