Where Are You Applying? Part 2

The previous "Where Are You Applying?" post is up over 200 comments now, so I'm starting another one to keep it reasonable. Please post where you are applying, which program (fiction, poetry, CNF, etc.) and if you've heard anything back yet (acceptances, rejections, waitlists, etc.)

Still waiting to hear from Cornell, Virginia, Greensboro, and Florida.

Nonfiction at The New School, Emerson, and Univ of San Fran. Haven't heard yet.

No genre required for multiple UK schools (Scotland and England)... most are MA only. Have heard back from most already, gotten in to the one I really wanted, Univ of Glasgow, which has a full MFA (US equivalent) program.

I've heard that in past years UVA has notified of some people of acceptance around this time in February. Fingers crossed!

Bird, the rumor on the Facebook group is that Syracuse has notified for poetry but not fiction. Not sure if that's true, but I'll let you know if I see anything else about it.

Courtney, you're the best. :)

Whew, here goes (no word at all):

Nonfiction:
Columbia
Sarah Lawrence
Hunter
Rutgers - Camden

Fiction:
Brown
New School
Columbia
Brooklyn
SF State
California College of the Arts (CCA)
UC Irvine
University of Iowa
Sarah Lawrence

For the record, I can't afford all this either, but we all gotta make sacrifices in the form of CC debt to achieve our dreams, no?

Gabes said...

@Lingering Scholar: Not to be contrary, but UVA was actually the last of 9 schools to notify me last year... it wasn't until the first week in April, if I recall. Also, if you check out the average response times at http://mfaresearchproject.wordpress.com/2011/09/17/application-response-times/, UVA seems to wait until late March to contact acceptances. Of course they could easily accept people earlier than that, but I thought I'd save you some needless worrying if you don't hear soon!

Has there been any updates on Iowa NWP or UNCW? Have either notified or has it been said on fb or elsewhere when they might?

c said...

I need Rutgers-Newark information. The FB group has one fiction acceptance. I applied for poetry but the waiting is giving me anxiety.

msipin said...

Hello everyone! So, per Raphael's deleted comments, Syracuse has notified all fiction acceptees? Why would Syracuse be tight-lipped about it?

Chasch said...

All these are for fiction:

CANADA:
- UBC (reserve list)
- Gueph (no answer)

USA
- University of Texas, Austin (Rejection)
- Brown (no answer)
- Cornell (no answer)

I haven't got any answers from my UK+Irish applications yet (Trinity College Dublin, Edinburgh, City University London, University of East Anglia).

c said...

@MSIPIN

my totally hypothetical theory is that perhaps they are waiting until they have applicants commiting to them.

I've wondered why schools ask what other schools applicants are applying to and I can imagine other schools' acceptance dates playing a role.

I just emailed the graduate coordinator at Cornell who told me that they will have decisions by next week.

Gene said...

It sounds like they've already made their fiction acceptance calls. I have observed (I hesitate to say "usually") that when a program advertises a date as the "decision" date, it's when they send out rejections (and acceptances have already been made). Does the email contradict that at all?

Betty said...

Wisconsin e-mail rejection this morning at 11. So I'm out at Minnesota and Wisconsin and waiting on 5 more. Crossing my fingers on those, but I might be empty-handed after it all. Which wouldn't be the worst thing, but would be a little disappointing.

violet24 said...

I'm curious - so Syracuse acceptances have all been sent out? Was this confirmed on the facebook group?

Claire said...

Nothing has really been confirmed about Syracuse except that there has definitely been at least one poetry acceptance. Syracuse has been really secretive about the acceptance process, apparently. Nobody really knows what's going on.

JS said...

Does anyone know how michigan's waitlist process works? I'm on it and the letter seemed worded to suggest that I was very high on their waitlist without explicitly saying it, but I wonder if they send the same letter to everyone? or if its tiered?

magNcheese said...

@Kells: Were you officially rejected from Alabama or are you assuming rejection? I know they've notified a few people, but I haven't heard of any rejection notifications yet.

DaymanNightmanWoahaoahoah said...

Gene, all she said was that they'll "have decisions" by next week. To stay sane I choose to take this literally, meaning "decisions" actually means "decisions" and not "notifications." Combine that with the fact that I asked if ACCEPTANCES had gone out yet. Yknow that saying that when you hear horses galloping, you should assume horses before assuming zebras?

Gene said...

@Dayman, I had this same conversation with UMass Amherst. I called the day they started making acceptance calls (but before they had begun calling), and I was told that decisions would come out within 7-10 days. I was asked for my name, I imagine the administrative assistant checked a list, and when I wasn't on it, I was told, "Yep, 7-10 days." That day they started making acceptance calls, and 10 days later, I got my rejection by email.

Kells said...

@magNcheese: I got a nicely worded letter in the mail yesterday from Alabama, so it's official. :-/

DaymanNightmanWoahaoahoah said...

Gene, that's hardly the same interaction. When someone tells you "7 to 10 days" after checking your name from a list, that's a hint that the US mail is involved and wouldn't have been if you were someone else. My interaction gives me much fewer cues to rejection. You might be right, sure, but not definitely being wrong is no reason to believe you're right. I have no indication, except for one person saying "Cornell acceptance hoo haa" and not responding to followup questions, that you ARE right about Cornell. But no matter what she meant, we'll know by the end of next week.

Gene said...

Sorry, I only meant to say that it was the same conversation in that I was asking about a notification date. I know that this is a very stressful time, but I was only trying to be helpful and provide details about a similar experience so that people can gauge their expectations however they wish. I didn't meant to imply that you should expect rejection. I hope that everyone is accepted to the program of their choice.

DaymanNightmanWoahaoahoah said...

Gene, of course not, I wasn't offended at all! Believe me, I accept rejection as a reality of this process. I just don't think I got quite as much as you were able to glean from your conversation with North Carolina.

2 Rejections:

Minnesota - (Kind, and nicely worded)
Amherst - (Harsh in it's brevity. Reminded me of my mother's story about being slapped by a stranger in a car when she was riding her bike home from school.)

1 Assumed Rejection:
Michigan - The waitlist notifications were delivered via E-mail, right?

Waiting On:

U. Iowa
Hollins
U. Arizona (I got a an E-mail a couple weeks ago from someone from admissions asking me to make sure my letters of recommendation were in the right place. They were. Is that standard? I'll take any vaguely positive interaction I can get.)

My first time applying. It's quite a discouraging process, and I give all of you credit who have hung in there and rallied for the next cycle. Some of these programs have lower acceptance rates than Harvard Med. school, I get that, it's just mortifying telling people who just assume you'll be in some awesome program in a year that that may not be the case after all. (Oh, and it feels unpleasant, too.) Best of luck, friends. :)

Like many others here, I am really starting to feel the fear. (To this effect, a few days ago I wrote a cathartic, page-long spiel that I clearly thought the better of and did NOT post here.) Specifically, as more & more of my schools have now sent out acceptances and I have received no such good fortune, I simultaneously realized that I really screwed up on my personal statement (exactly the wrong & most off-putting tone, far too “sappy,” etc.). Hence the fear. Of course, there was one school that thankfully did not want a personal statement—but that is small consolation right now. . . . So I’m thinking of the ill-advised, 11th hour, last-minute effort to apply to one or two more places. Please help. I’ve already consulted some lists online organized by deadline, but they’re not really helping.

--Apart from Boston Univ., what (if any) are some fully funded, full-residency MFA programs whose deadlines still have not passed?

--On a fairly different path, what (if any) are some fully funded 1-year M.A. English/Literature/Rhetoric programs—also who do not require the GRE subject test?

Yeah, I know that there are a lot of contingencies in each of those. But I just need to find one or two that may be right for me. . . . Anyway, thank you so much for any advice—and best of luck to everyone.

Steven said...

@Matt, I really hope this doesn't sound smug or self-satisfied since I haven't been accepted anywhere either yet and I am difficultly feeling "the fear" (a great song by the band Pulp btw which captures how I feel at the moment)but I think you should just take a breather. Apps are something that you need to take time on and work at over a period of time. Stressing out even more won't help.

Steven said...

Thought I pass on the latest news from the FB page that George Mason has begun to send out acceptances by mail and so people should be beginning to hear back next week for fiction. Apparently they send out poetry, CNF, and then fiction.

Officially rejected via email from Syracuse this morning. Have yet to hear from the other 9 places I applied. I reckon LSU will start to notify people soon, huh? Has anyone heard anything? I've seen that several people have been accepted to Oklahoma State, but my online appl just says something like, "materials sent to the dept for admission recommendation." Oh god, this is hard to take, but at least I've gotten my first rejection out of the way. The realization that I may be completely shut out has finally sunk in. Sucks!

MisterSammie said...

Like @Monica, e-mail from Syracuse this AM telling me: "No Soup for You!" Bummer, but no worries, I hear it's really, really cold and gray in Syracuse, NY anyhow. I want Florida!

Monica said...

@MisterSammie,
Syracuse was the most selective of the schools I applied to. And while it wasn't number one on my list, it still would've been sweet though. Hopefully, I'll be accepted elsewhere, but as everyone else said, this whole thing is kind of a crapshoot, right? I also applied at
Ok State
ODU
GCSU
Ole Miss
LSU
Wichita
GA State
NMSU
McNeese

Fingers crossed for everyone :)

anyway, still waiting on my schools. I only had one intense crying spell.

I said 'fuck it' and accepted my offer to Ohio State REALLY early!

Still haven't heard from 7 schools, but I have no doubt that Ohio State is the place for me.

Good luck to everyone waiting to hear back from schools! If I get accepted anywhere else I'll post it up and let everyone know a spot will be opening up for someone else!

If anyone else accepts to Ohio State, holla at ya boy.

a double rejection morning: syracuse and umass amherst! any more news about cornell via the facebook group? good luck you guys and hang in there!

Claire said...

Apparently Purdue is notifying today. Also, Vanderbilt waitlists have gone out.

Kells said...

@claire, thanks for the update! any word on whether those Vandy waitlists are via post or email?

Claire said...

No problem! I believe the Vandy waitlist notifications were by email.

Dark_Interpreter said...

Why don't schools notify rejected candidates at the same time they notify accepted candidates? I don't like being left to cling to a tiny shred of hope while rejection letters linger behind acceptance calls or emails. And actually, I've received one acceptance at the same time as what others reported, but also one about a week after others reported their acceptance. (I've also got one rejection at the same time as everyone else.)

Chloe Campbell said...

got waitlisted at greensboro today! it's the first real response i've gotten, and i was sure it was a lost cause.

humblepie said...

Horatio, are you on the Facebook group? Congrats again on your acceptance to Ohio State. This process is frustrating. You could still hear some good news from the other seven schools, but you can't go wrong with Ohio State. I'm on the waitlist at Ohio State and hope to get an offer.

phrased said...

@Dark_Interpreter: It's because they send out more acceptances than they have spaces for, depending on how many people decline they may be able to add more people. After it's all said and done they send out their final rejection letters.

Dark_Interpreter said...

@phrased - Ah, that makes sense. Thanks for the explanation.

Here's a question. If there are people who have already received their letters from a certain institution(i.e. acceptance or waitlist), and you haven't yet been informed of any admissions decision (rejection or otherwise) is it likely a "no"? I haven't heard back from Michigan, UC Davis, Purdue or Boise, and I've read that acceptance letters have been sent out for each. There might be even more that I haven't come across yet. Has anyone heard from/heard of someone who has heard from the following yet?

U of Iowa
Brown
Virginia
Arizona
Oregon
Columbia College Chicago
USF
NMSU
Mississippi

Or does anyone know the tentative dates?

Thanks in advance! I'm just trying to emotionally prepare for the worst.

Claire said...

Eketer-Pietra, each school does it differently, so it's hard to say. According to people who have been accepted to Michigan, all of their offers and waitlists have already gone out. Purdue notified all of its accepted students today - don't know about waitlists. I don't think Boise State is done.

As for the schools on your list, as far as I know no one has heard anything from any of them yet. UVA always waits until theverylastminute, so don't worry about them until April.

People have been posting fairly regular updates from the facebook group, which is where most of the action seems to be happening this year, including the list of notifications. At mfaresearchproject.wordpress.com, there is a list of "application response times" which gives a general idea of when they might start notifying.

Really, though, it's all kind of a guessing game. Just remember the mantra that it really isn't over until you have the rejection in hand!

phrased said...

@Eketer-Pietra: No word from USF.

Eketer-Pietra said...

Thanks Claire, Phrased. Any idea about UC Davis? Also, if Michigan has sent out all of its acceptances and waitlists, I wish they'd just send out their rejections! I mean, they've already picked their pool of admissible students.

Hi guys,

This is what I have. I applied to fiction.

Rejections:
Syracuse
Minnesota
UT Austin

Acceptances:
Virginia Tech (via email after Skype interview)

No replies yet, but it seems answers have already gone out so I'm assuming rejections:
Rutgers Newark
Michigan
Indiana
U Illinois Urbana-Champaign

No word yet:
Cornell
Iowa
Southern Illinois Carbondale
Arizona State
Brown

If anyone has any word on these last five it would be cool to hear.

Horatio Funktower said...

@HibaK: Virginia Tech has an awesome MFA program. I did my undergrad there and grew up in Blacksburg. Great faculty, amazing place to live, and I believe they have awesome funding.

I highly recommend Virginia Tech.

HibaK said...

@Horatio

Thanks, I've heard. It will be very nice to go there, if I don't hear anything from Cornell or Iowa or Brown, which I honestly prefer. Arizona would also be ideal. I'm Middle Eastern and I don't know how I'll deal with the cold when I come to the US.

And the funding they offered me is stupendous! I'm really psyched. :D

RnR said...

@monica, as far as your list, i'm pretty sure ok state is done notifying in both poetry and fiction.

i think i've seen one/some boise st. poetry acceptances. any word on whether fiction has also gone out?

Monica said...

@Eketer, I also applied at Ole Miss and NMSU. I haven't heard back from either one. Fingers crossed for both of us :)

Laura said...

The online status for my Minnesota CNF application just changed from "Awaiting Program Decision" to "Final Review," which, according to the website, means I should be receiving a final decision in two days. I had already accepted the fact that Minnesota was probably going to be a no-go since there have been acceptances reported... but since there have also been rejections reported, could it possibly go either way? Yikes.

The website gives this definition: Final Review - your program has made its admission decision and University officials are doing a very quick (usually within two business days) final review of your materials before sending out the decision notification.

That sounds more positive than it's probably meant to. I can't help but think, "Why would they take care to do one last review of my materials if they're going to reject me?" Gah, these slivers of (false) hope are going to drive me crazy!

Kristin Michelle said...

FYI someone just reported an IWW fiction acceptance on the facebook group...looks like it's starting

J.M. said...

Any clue as to notification method?

Melanie Kameko said...

@J.M. IWW fiction phone call. But their admissions are reportedly heavily staggered, so don't get too worried.

Unknown said...

U-Wash Seattle (poetry) could be going out soon, according to historical response times on the MFA Research Project. Nerves!

Laura said...

Officially rejected form Minnesota. Whew. Just nice to know for sure, I suppose.

J.M. said...

@Melanie Kameko

Thank you.

virginia slim said...

Sorry, I'm not on facebook...are a lot of people reporting IWW calls?

Claire said...

Just one Iowa call so far.

amy said...

as far as I've seen there has only been one IWW acceptance on the draft

Gene said...

There isn't much in the way of recent information on Brown notifications on the MFA Research Project, but I can say from personal experience that Brown rejections went out last year on Feb. 25 (via update to Embark website), at least for poetry. Does anyone else have personal experience with Brown notifications since 2009 (which is the last recorded acceptance date on MRP)? Could someone post a call for notification date on the Facebook group? Thanks!

fictioner said...

I've left the draft group about a week ago, so I have nowhere to post this: I've been accepted into IWW for fiction this morning. Samantha Chang called to give me the news.

llewllew said...

@fictioner congrats!!! that's such great news. For the rest of us, acceptances are staggered so we have the next few days to freak out.

I wonder if they do it alphabetically?

WDS said...

@Horatio

I haven't accepted yet but I've got an offer from Ohio State in CNF, and I'm 95 percent sure I'm gonna take it. (Mostly waiting on Iowa.) Columbus is a great town!

amy said...

@Fictioner, why did you choose leave the draft? No judgement, just curious.

amy said...

ps. huge congrats!!!

fictioner said...

thank you all. I think the best part about the whole thing was when Samantha Chang told me how they "really liked my manuscript." I have no idea how the acceptances are going out. We talked about some funding opportunities but i was literally dumbstruck so i jus sounded like a straightout fool.

fictioner said...

and to all those who are still waiting good news: keep up your spirits! I had recieved five straight rejections and had totally given up on any hope of getting in before I got accepted to IWW. shows how subjective this process really is. DONT LOSE HOPE

Sara said...

A bit off topic but someone raised the question earlier. I also left the FB group a few months ago because of the intense negativity and bad spirits in that group. I wasn't even involved in any of it; I hardly commented. What I read though was catty, nasty, and just mean, really. Not a nice context for anyone.

University of Arizona acceptance, today, by phone.

Morning, guys! Has Vandy finished poetry acceptances? What's everyone's feeling on this?

And one more thing!
@Art Film for Girls and @Poet, congratulations guys! Thank you for sharing your good news! It makes me happy to read it.

Great job & best wishes to all our winners!

Got my official rejections from Ohio and Kansas today, both via online status checks. For Kansas, there was a little button to "View Online Decision Form" in applyweb that would be easy to miss.

Unknown said...

still waiting on

U of Oregon
UC Boulder
U of Montana
U of Washington

anyone else? or any intel on when we might hear from these programs?

Translation Page said...

Still waiting on Oregon, Oregon State, Notre Dame, Iowa State, IWW.
All fiction.

David said...

What happened, if anything, with Iowa today?

j a w z said...

soo anyone else apply to the joint cornell phd/mfa program? any word?

Poet said...

@jawz. I did for poetry, but it's my understanding that both programs must accept you independently. Assuming rejection from the MFA for me, and I think it's highly unlikely I'll get into the PhD at this point.

Unknown said...

oh dear. Has anyone who applied to the U of Washington logged back into the system? Mine says "application complete," but near the bottom it has a chart with the receipt dates for SOP, manuscript, transcript, etc. and all say "this has not been recieved." I haven't heard anything from them. Do you think that they just don't update these fields? Did my entire application packet get lost in the mail? I didn't confirm its arrival...

applied to MFA @ FLA, Hollins, Va Tech and UNC Greensboro in Poetry...no word yet...ACK!

Anonymous said...

@Unknown, I wouldn't worry about the UW online application status. I heard from them because they couldn't find my transcripts. They found them eventually, so I'm sure the app is complete, but the online status for the manuscript, transcript, etc., still says those items have not been received. Conclusion: the online status matters not. Chin up!

@ Art Film For Girls. Congratulations to you! I applied to Northern Michigan University as well and was hoping you could help me. Did the POI tell you if they have completed all the acceptances and/or waits-lists? I was surprised to hear that they are notifying already because a person told me that they weren't starting to review applicants until the Feb 15th. Maybe I'm just clinging to hope here and am in need of dose of reality, so any info you have would be awesome. Again congratulations on full-funding in fiction!

@MCW is there an email address I could write you at? I've become paranoid that the schools could lurk on these blogs and I don't know how much they want public, etc. :)

You can always delete your email address from here after I write you.

Thanks!

Hunter nonfiction notified me on 2/16, and I heard from another person that she got a call on the same day.
